Media Gurus, Please Enter

Lately I've been downloading anime episodes but I want to watch them in the highest possible quality. However, there are a million different resolutions and video formats. Please enlighten me on the following formats:

Avi, H264, X264.

Which one is better? Also, what is the BEST resolution available? What is TRUE HD? They have 1280x720p and I have no idea if that's considered "good". For the record, I have a 19" Monitor with max resolution of 1440x900.

If you download any other container you are a f'aggot. 1080p is the full HD, but you won't find many groups releasing episodes like that. You should also be using CCCP + MPC to ensure you have all the necessary codecs and a good player.

Then stop that. Uninstall and delete that garbage.

http://www.cccp-project.net/ Always make sure everything is as up-to-date as possible. MPC is Media Player Classic (Homecinema). It's one of the two players that comes bundled in CCCP.

And FYI, 1080p creates a resolution of 1920x1080.

I think a lot of the codecs need updating, but downloading it will give you a very good start. It's not that hard to get completely updated if you want, but it's still good to use as is anyway. It should, yes.

Yes, you would. 720p is quite a bit smaller and less gorgeous, but it's often the best you can get for many episodes. Just make sure you don't get retarded upscales or ones with really obscure ratios.

[COLOR="RoyalBlue"]I don't know the specs on your computer, but as a word of caution you might experience some slowdown problems with 1080p or 720p. This is usually ffdshow decoder's fault, since it isn't optimized for H264. I recommend CoreAVC for a H264 decoder.

As for updating, uninstall VLC. I don't believe it actually gives you any codecs / filters, but to be sure, run CCCP Insurgent and uninstall whatever's in the leftmost column. Then just install CCCP and you'll be done.[/COLOR]

Zaotsu's right about the CoreAVC. I don't use it but many people swear by it. I've never had any problems so I haven't bothered yet.

I checked and everything seems fine. The main thing would be getting updated to CoreAVC for superiority reasons. Unless I missed something? What's outdated?

By using this you're almost never gonna run into problems. That's the point.

Oh also, when I set the video as fullscreen, it's not really "fullscreen". I changed the aspect ratio to 16:9 and it's now widescreen, is this recommended?

Yes, if you forced it be true full screen you'd throw off the ratio and make it ugly. That aside, I almost always just leave the default ratio (whatever they made it) set because I don't want to throw off the quality. Even though it's not really a huge deal unless you're a serious quality whore.

Of course, there's also releases like Mochi's Pandora Hearts that will be totally trashed if you forced them into 16:9. So just watch for that.

Dude, I do not even understand all the doo-hickies and whatnot. I just know what to use, how to get, what it does, what to do and what not to do, etc. I've learned everything that's important by years of hanging around avid fans. I'm certainly not an expert.

Talk to SwordTM if you want to know really technical stuff, especially about the whole 1080p/1080i thing. I know he knows quite a bit about that stuff.

Sometimes only the results matter, eh? I only go for what I want to know about xD I did poorly on certain parts of my High School CS class (Linked Lists and extensive Polymorphism) due to lack of motivation.

And quite frankly I think sometimes trying to really understand the details of something could be doing too much. I tried doing that with .png images and their Huffman doohickies and failed miserably xD
