Laptop internet problems + IP Conflict is the whaaaa?

I've been recently getting some very fruity problems with my laptop, and sometimes my desktop. For no reason at all I would get an "IP Conflict" problem on my modem or my father's computer (if either desktop is on plus the laptop is on), who both use cables. I try to renew IP, but it won't work. The only way I fixed it was by resetting the modem and restarting the computer. Vista desktops.

Right now I've getting a problem on my laptop where for some reason the wireless fails to maintain a signal. It can work for about 10 minutes, then fizzles out without saying that there's a problem. I've remedied that situation by using a cable, but now BOTH my cable and wireless on my laptop can't get an internet signal for shizz. XP Laptop.

I thought that is was a modem problem; the people at Comcast said it was a computer problem, which seemed like the answer. I am now starting to think otherwise. Gah I hate it when computer problems arise. It's like trying to play House on stuff I don't even have knowledge of. Should I get a new modem from Comcast, or try to fix this myself?

Dude. You just echo'd my internet problems, and I use Comcast as well. I have a 360, my laptop, and my roommate's laptop, and for some reason mine grabs the same IP as the 360 for no apparent reason at random times. I can only fix it by either restarting the computer, or, if I'm lucky, disconnecting and reconnecting to the wireless. I solved it for a while by giving the 360 a mandatory IP address different from the one my laptop kept using, but now it's back to the same old problem. It doesn't help that all the Comcast people here in Miami only seem to speak Spanish, which, contrary to popular belief, I do not. No hablo mucho Espanol.

Do you think the main source of the problem is computer related, or it's the modem's fault everything is out of whack?

I blame Comcast. Never happened at my Barracks in Dam Neck.

I believe it would be the router causing these problems, but I'm not sure. I'd try "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew" in command prompt, but you said you tried to renew already...

So on a scale of 1-10 then, how likely is is the router's problem? Guess all that bandwidth must have turned it senile, mixing IPs with another computer. >_>
