Cosplaying - Looks or Passion?

So we're all familiar with cosplaying. We've all seen it. Some of us are even guilty of doing it (no shame in that). So the question I pose to you all, is, When it comes to cosplaying, what is more important to you, looks or passion?(as in you're doing it because you like it and are familiar with the character you are portraying as)

For me there's a minimum when it comes to looks, plus it depends who they are cosplaying as (A scantily clad character obviously demands a certain...body type) but in the end I would prefer they actually know the series/character rather than look good but have no idea who they are.

Not so much looks, but I like cosplaying being elaborate.
If they do naruto just cause they saw him in a preview on cartoon network, they don't really deserve to wear the costume xD

Like I'm going as Alucard to anime expo this year, and I want it to be elaborate as heck!
So looks/creativity are a plus, but if you don't know the character, don't bother dressing up as it.

I personally think cosplaying is, well, interesting, but it is kinda hard to turn characters in a manga into a costume. However, quote:

I say a lot of both. If you suck @ cosplaying, passion is useless, and vice versa.

Some characters we just connect with. While I'd have to be convinced to dye my hair red, I connect with Reno from FF7. Though that's mainly because I love his attitude and wish I was that confident all the time. (If real life wasn't prejudice like in FF games, I'd be more open.)

However, I would also do L Lawliet. He's just cool. =P

Yeah! Like I would probably be a good Hiei or Alucard. Because I can do my hair like Hiei, and my hair is already like Alucard.

Sorry, gotta be a FF geek for a second here.

You say you dressed as the black magician, yet, while they are very similar in all games, they're slightly different. And some are even enemies in a few of the games. Like FF9, which the link you just gave us is from. And that's Vivi.

I voted for "a little bit of both," but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it ultimately doesn't matter if the person cosplaying gives a damn about the character they're dressing up as. When I see images of good cosplay, there is no denying the quality or the time/effort that individual put into making a good costume. I don't know them personally, I don't know if Girl X really gives a pomegranate about Cammy, or if Guy Y even knows how to play Siegfried in Soul Calibur. Of course it's nice if they actually know the character, but in the end, people will judge based on how good you look. You can be the biggest Sephiroth fanboy ever, but if you look like pomegranate, then nobody will give a damn.

Of course, I think that it would be ideal for people to relate to the character they're cosplaying as, but a good costume is a good costume.

All that being said, I'd love to cosplay as Talim one day. We have the same body type (tiny and flat-chested) and she's my favorite SC character. I never have though, because I don't feel I have the sewing skills necessary to do her justice.
