Otaku is a person that devotes himself so much to his fandom that he has no social life, and as the word itself implies, doesn't even leave his house(Besides for shopping/etc) because of said fandom.
Otaku is an incredibly insulting thing to be called.

Honestly the only people who have ruined Otaku culture is the Western culture butchering the word. People in Japan don't like Otakus either due to the nature of Japan being a working country and Otakus are seen as "lazy people", but this doesn't imply nor generalize the fact that they're all social inept like it does in America/Western countries.

This is almost the exact same argument as what qualifies as anime in definition (an argument that's come up waaay too many times in this forum than it should). And both are very pointless debates at that: they have different meanings in the different languages.

In short, the Word otaku have a Heavy meaning depending on where you use it, in Japan it means exactly what Malthe says, but in the other part of the world it can probably mean what Razmos says.
