Was he unboxing anime merchandise in the bath while wearing a japanese schoolgirls swimming suit with tentacles on his fingers.
I'm literally speechless here. He makes otaku's look bad.

Otaku is just a geek who specifically likes japanese stuff. I don't see how it's any different than a geek collecting trading cards or a football fan collecting memorabilia.
Saying it's "an incredibly bad thing to be" is a little extreme. And you seem to be lumping all otaku's together.

Otaku is a person that devotes himself so much to his fandom that he has no social life, and as the word itself implies, doesn't even leave his house(Besides for shopping/etc) because of said fandom.
Otaku is an incredibly insulting thing to be called.

Otaku is an incredibly insulting thing to be called. I think you are getting your terms mixed up.
Do you mean a Hikikomori?

?
Nowhere on wikipedia does it say that Otaku are social shut-ins who care for nothing but anime.

No i'm not.
I mean Otaku.
Otaku means not leaving your house because of your fandom, it means having no social life because of your fandom, it means that your life is your fandom.
A lot of people use it as a word for anime/manga fans, that's not what the word actually means and in japan it is a very, VERY insulting word.
I don't know about you, but where i'm from having your life revolve around one single thing sacrificing all social relationships isn't a healthy nor good thing, it's a pretty pineappleing bad thing.
The word itself comes from 'house' because it means that you're not leaving your house due to said fandom.

You're view on what is an Otaku is an extreme one. You are basing an entire subculture on the most extreme of cases and saying "All otaku are like this". What you have said is not what the word means.

From Google Dictionary: Quote:(in Japan) Young people who are highly skilled in or obsessed with computer technology to the detriment of their social skills.
From Urban Dictionary 4th definition(At this moment): Quote:Otaku has multiple meanings. Casual anime fans use this word in the context of being a well established fan who knows much about anime and manga. Japanese see this term as derogitory which represents a person who is a lifeless nerd. Wapanese see this as derogitory given their strong beilief that because they watched some anime that all the sudden they are japanese.
This is a high-context word, in the american dialect, given the type of people using the word and the context of the discussion this OTAKU could mean expert or geek, complemetary or derogatory.
Larry has a wealth of knowlege about anime, he is a real otaku.
Some essay? about how the word Otaku came to mean what it is today
In short, the Word otaku have a Heavy meaning depending on where you use it, in Japan it means exactly what Malthe says, but in the other part of the world it can probably mean what Razmos says.
Also hikkikomori its a person who absolutely stays in his room/home and mostly refuse to have any contact with the outside or going outside of his room due to some fear, trauma or some other reasons (Difficult to say what). And otaku can still go out of his room/house to eat, buy their toys and other stuff, but spend most of his time in his room with his object of obsession.
