Clean Slates and Golden Hammers

After failing a Golden Hammer on my Empress glove, I read the tooltip on the item and noticed it said you could only use one golden hammer per item. Rather than taking its word for it, I used another one and failed it too. After using all my clean slate scrolls I got one of the hammer slots back but not the other. Did I screw myself out of a slot on my gloves or can I still clean slate the first failed hammer back?

That's a relief. The last time I asked about clean slates someone told me it only retrieved the most recent failed scroll slot.

I used 2 of the 3 I got from the Virtue event on my old 2h Empress Sword.
Also used 2, from the same event, on my Neo Pants.

The description only says you can use only one because it's just straight up translated from the Korean version, where hammer slots are capped at one. Our hammer slots are capped at two, so you can really use any combination of Golden Hammers and Vicious Hammers to get the extra two slots.

Definitely good to know, but the main point of my anecdote was to come up for an excuse as to why I stupidly used a second hammer before recovering the slot from the first one.

The game doesn't know. Once you've recovered a slot, your item is indistinguishable from one that never had that slot used up.
