Of the items they showed, I have a bit of an issue with Fragment of Destiny. It gives damage to Spectral Blades, but also buffs elemental damage bonuses. This either implies that Spectral Blade runes will apply elemental damage or the item itself does not boost Spectral Blades damage enough to justify calling it a "melee Wizard" weapon since it gives comparable boosts to other elements. It does however point away from Wicked Wind Critical Mass builds which is interesting at the same time, though I hope they improve the other Energy Twister runes to be as useful.
I'm curious about what would happen if you swapped the Homunculus after casting Zombie Dogs/Gargantuan. Not sure if they're promoting gear switching or not, but that would be interesting and at the same time, leans towards that philosophy they seem to disagree with where you need to do something tedious to be competitive, i.e. have a gearset available to do these CD reductions, or a Maximus for example to proc that demon slave, which is quite a good idea by the way. In the end game though, Homunculus has such terrible base damage I don't think many people could justify its offhand at the cost of that damage unless the new pet runes are amazing.

I thought the changes looked pretty good until I noticed that the barbarian throwing weapon legendary was a spear. Does Blizzard really not understand which weapon types matter for what regarding Barbarians 4 months after release?

Dark Link Wrote:What's wrong with +10% Attack Speed? Because weapon throw costs fury to use, the only self-sustaining way to continue using it was by stacking crit and using the passive skill that had a chance to refund fury on crit. Pairing that with the shout rune that did the same thing, you could use skills like ancient spear and war cry to keep weapon throwing indefinitely without any start up fury. Essentially, 10% crit rate was too good to pass up. Not to mention that stacking crit chance and crit damage was the best means of stacking damage, anyway.

These new barbarian changes look somewhat promising. Maybe I'll start playing again in 1.0.4 if there's a decent way of farming acts 3 and 4 that's more compelling than stacking tank gear and blowing cooldowns on every elite pack.

Double Nado Barb? Glad to see they aren't touching the spec. Although I'm interested in seeing what they do with WW since they did mention there will be some tweaks to help with skill viability. I like the rend changes.

I just know that I wanted to play a two handed barbarian that stacked nothing but damage, but when I quit playing that wasn't a viable option (and I doubt that worked even with that sprint tornado build).

The idea that they would even consider touching One With Everything scares the pomegranate out of me.

On the contrary, I think Blizzard should never itemize anything to tailor-fit a specific build. That just hurts build diversity. Having a legendary that does a ton of damage but isn't exactly what you need is a fantastic thing. It keeps other weapon choices relevant, and should you decide to stick with the legendary, it also forces you to look for additional Fury regen in your build that you wouldn't otherwise need. The weapon looks powerful and has some fun attributes to boot; that's all you can ask for. Also, the game's only been out for 3 months. Kripparrian didn't come up with the build; he just made a video about it after it had already been circling around for a few days.

It says right there "Some people want to try out a ranged barb. We think that's awesome. Here you go." Literally, the item's only purpose is for weapon throwing ranged barbarians. What's worse is it's worse than any decently rolled one hand rare in every aspect (including damage) except for the 12% movement speed on it; even if you're doing nothing but using weapon throw and ancient spear. The fact that even its weapon type doesn't synergize with the build it's trying to promote is just insult to injury. Not to mention with how rare legendary items are you could easily find dozens of near perfect rare weapons before you even got one half decent version of this.
Bashiok confirms Patch is next week!
New "Treasure Goblin" Ring. Quote:Puzzle Ring (Ring) - This ring gives heroes a chance to summon a Treasure Goblin when theyre hit. The tooltip will be something along the lines of: "This ring sometimes calls forth a Treasure Goblin when you are hit." EDIT: [8/18/12] Unofficial 1.0.4 Patch Notes Patch was datamined and people found a "Prestige" system called "Paragon Levels". Looks like Krip's "Champion Levels" suggestion was implemented.

How can it possibly be worse in damage than a decent one-handed rare with a near 50% damage mod on Weapon Throw? That alone is easily worth as much as a bunch of crit damage and a socket. The reason the dps is not up to par with the top tier weapons is because it's ilvl 60. Dunno what's up with that, should be 62 imo. But no, the mods on the weapon are great.

One baby step. Somewhat in the right direction. Still, it makes things interesting. Cheers for the notes.

That alone is easily worth as much as a bunch of crit damage and a socket. It's honestly been too long since I played actively to give a long and concrete explanation using well thought out calculations, but in exchange for that 50% damage mod you're effectively sacrificing at least 200 dps, 10% crit chance and 50% crit damage. Unfortunately, there's a bit of an unknown as to how many of that weapon's attributes are preset and how many are random, or if that's preset and it's going to have a random attribute too. If the weapon's incapable of having a socket, that's an extra 100% crit damage you're losing by taking it. Even at only 300% crit damage (easily attainable through decent itemization), the extra 10% crit chance from weapon mastery would increase your damage by 30% and the extra 20% could be more than offset by the damage difference on that weapon and a good ilvl 63 rare. That's without accounting for the fact that you'll probably need the 10% crit chance from weapon mastery to not suffer from downtime only because you're not generating enough fury for weapon throw to be self sustaining, too.

looks like it gets 1 random prop, so it can roll a socket or a (smallish) crit line
you know... maybe i just wasnt thinking up until now, but itd be fucking amazing as an offhand. easily better than some random well rolled 63. it gets enough base dps to be competitive... who needs a shield anyways as ranged? |
