Guild Wars 2
I'm really interested in getting this game when my new computer arrives. What is the community of Guild Wars like? Fairly mature?

From what I experienced Beta Weekend 2, they're really polite. I don't think I ever saw any arguments, insults, etc.

If it's anything like guild wars 1, it's one of the most mannered communities in online gaming.
Incredibly nice people that'll help out anyone and people are friendly all the time. Although that may be because of GW1 only having the hardcore fans left, but still.

Thanks for the responses :}

Is there a place better than the Wiki to read up on how the game works? I'm still pretty lost on how character progression works, how you obtain skills, etc.

You obtain skills by just fighting, it's a pretty simple system actually, it comes with playing really fast.

I think that's it. With the amount of hype this game is getting, it's likely to be overflowing with the usual trash. As always in any online gaming community, you find quality in the guilds/forums you decide to be a part of.

I'm developing a sudden interest in the game. Can someone explain how Dynamic Events work? From what I've read, I get the impression that they're just lengthy public questlines that pop up while you're wandering around. But:

- Do I have any set goals to pursue out in the world? In most MMOs, you kind of just wait in a hub for some kind of activity to do. What's putting me out there in the first place?
- If I decide to take a break in the middle of one of these, does the game move on without me? What about if another player decides to push the quest line further while I'm doing something else?

I apologize if these questions are really dumb; I never played GW1 and I'm just now looking at the info for GW2.

Dynamic Events can just be a single event which just happens, a small chain, or a long chain called a meta event. Meta events can end in a big boss fight if you push them all the way to one end.

As for goals, after the first personal story mission (which is the start of the game), you start of in front of the capital city of your race, and the game tells you to talk to a scout NPC. This NPC shows you the map and the various "hearts" on there. Hearts are like localized quests, which you can do once, and afterwards you can buy things from the NPC involved using Karma (which you gain by doing events). Every area in the game has quite a few hearts to complete, so you'll be going everywhere to do them. There's also waypoints (to which you can teleport for a small fee), locations, and other (sometimes hidden) things to explore for, which is rewarded with experience, and once you've fully explored an area you're also rewarded with items. The personal story also has missions that take you to certain places, so you'll probably encounter things along the way.

Now, if you leave an event while it's still going on, the game records your contribution and still rewards you based on that once the event ends. Rewards for events come in 3 ranks, bronze, silver and gold. It doesn't take a whole lot to get a gold rank for most events, but since it's not really clear when you get a certain rank you're encouraged to stay until the end. Events can also fail, in which case you still get a reward (though probably less than when you'd have completed it). Events happen even if the players aren't playing them (in which case they'll usually fail), so it's possible to go to a town, and find it under siege, while another player that arrives later, misses the siege because you won (and there'll probably be some other event going on instead). Events repeat, though some take far longer to repeat than others, and quite a few need a certain condition to trigger (one of the most simple being just talking to an NPC who is waiting for someone to escort their transport). Either way, if you're not there to play you'll probably miss some things, but there's always something to do.

I'm really not sure if I should try a Sylvari now or wait until launch (I'm making my main a Sylvari). I'll probably spend some time in the character creator with one (just to try out the options), but I'm not sure about what I should do after that.

The video appears to be private. Still, it's always better to try things yourself.

Also, this video shows the Asura starting area. I think it looks really cool.

EDIT: Found another upload, Sylvari appear to have the most varried options in the character creator. Definitely looking forward to playing one even more.

So, what worlds are people going to be playing on at relase?

I'm going for Far shiverpeaks most likely.

Would be nice if we could find out where people from SP are going to be Smile

With the exception of the NA/Europe split, it's kind of a tossup, isn't it? Whatever everyone else is playing on. For NA, Sea of Sorrows sounds pretty cool. Might go with that if the people I play with don't have one in mind.

How exactly do you get on the beta for the weekend? My new computer just came in today and I'm very excited to get my first taste of GW2. I have my beta access key from preordering the game already. I just don't know how to use it.

I think you use the key at https://register.guildwars2.com/ and create a Guild Wars account if you don't already have one.

Uh...I guess you register on that website Kevin gave you, and you should get an email with instructions on how to download the client.
