But not necessarily seen.
Also, just quoting this for the sheer awesomeness of the coincidence.
Quote:"I agree that any reasonable outside observer would say, 'It looks like a discovery,'" British theoretical physicist John Ellis, a professor at King's College London who has worked at CERN since the 1970s, told The Associated Press. "We've discovered something which is consistent with being a Higgs."
So, Im apparently a British theoretical, who is a professor at King's College London who has worked at CERN since the 1970s.
Yup.

Calling it the 'God Particle' is just asking for trouble.

I find the term God Particle offensive.

God Particle?
They actually found this quite some time ago because a reporter noticed a picture of the Higgs boson at CERN and asked for an explanation. The scientist told him that they feature discovered particles on the walls of CERN. The reporter asked, if that means it's been discovered. The scientist said, in effect, yes.
Awful nomenclature though.

You can blame the idiotic news corporations for that one, as very few particle physicists would call the Higgs Boson the "god" particle.

What in the name of pineapple. A picture of a Higgs?

inb4 physicists and applied mathematicians wreak havoc in this thread...
I find that labelling the Higgs Boson as the "god" particle is plain silly. It's just another particle that grants/possesses certain characteristics based on the current theories. Stop twisting science into your own imagination. Throwing religion into the stew-pot is just like opening a bottle of tert-butyllithium in open air.

Makes me realise that I probably should've taken more courses in physics. That awkward moment when you can't understand what the hell this all is about. Science magazine I subscribe to said that this could basically give a mass for the whole universe. Now that's all I understood about it...
Btw, this thread is a bit late.

I'ma bout 1/4 of the way through that documentary, and it seems quite accurate. If anyone is intrested, I would recommend watching it.
Also, the range of possible Higgs mass has been narrowed a little since that video has been made (It's been narrowed down to the 115-127 GeV range since december).

Thanks, I was looking for those numbers.
Also, calling it the god particle would imply it doesn't exist.

Wiki Wrote:Higgs is an atheist, and is displeased that the Higgs particle is nicknamed the "God particle", because the term "might offend people who are religious". Usually this inappropriate nickname for the Higgs boson is attributed to Leon Lederman, the author of the book The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?, but the name is the result of the insistence of Lederman's publisher: originally, Lederman had intended to refer to it as, the "goddamn particle".

Public perception is everything; it doesn't matter if it's the official or unofficial name, or even an entirely fabricated name, if people latch onto it, it doesn't matter what it was called before. It's a terrible name on many levels, but a name making sense has never been a determining factor to those who are not professionals that deal directly with whatever it may be.
The fact that a news article referred to it as the god particle proves my point on that, at the very least.
