Maplestory Myths - know any?

Here's a few that are either myths or I'm just curious about it (but doesn't really warrant a thread in the Q&A).

Killing a monster while it is being knocked back into the edge of the screen causes it to drop nothing. (prevalent in PQs)

Potential stats are determined as soon as it receives a pot or cubed (ie: the Lens themselves don't determine the stats; using better lens don't give you "better" lines or higher chance of ranking up).

That is actually based in reality. Not a myth. Back in the beta days or the early 0.1x days you had to avoid kiling King Slime at the edge of the screen because the drops would fall off the map making the PQ impossible. It was a real problem. This was fixed by having the edge of the map act as a wall too, so the drops would bounce off the wall and back into the map.

As for potential stats, that's patently false. The item, if it has a potential at all, is determined when its dropped, not when it has a lens used on it. The proof for this is a hack that was prevalent a while ago where hackers could see the potential stats of an item before requiring a reveal.

One of my old favorite scrolling myths was way back in the day if you went to Florina Beach and dropped mesos on the "sacrificial little platforms" in the first map and stood in the center your 10% scrolls would work. I mean why wouldn't the programmers work this into the code right? I probably created a few myths by simply answering any question to where a drop may be obtained that was GACH only back in the day, to go kill Mateons in Omega Sector. I at one time or another told people they dropped everything from VIP WEAPONS to 10% shoe att scrolls.

I heard the white lady data exist although is encripted.... I tried to check with Maple Dump (at that time in the old versions) and I found that when I click on some numbers the program itself closes... and on another ones the program trow an error and close itself.... maybe it was work of NxProse while he is doing new Masteria areas.... and before he quits...

it will be awesome if the GMS guys takes the idea of the white lady and makes a new Masteria area with her as a boss.

But in my early MS days, I'm talking shortly after Beta closed. I was wandering down in the old Subway area of Kerning, where Wraiths were. I walked into a portal, probably the last map...and there was a GIANT Wraith. I mean a real big one! (Think Mushmom) I would later hear other people talking about it, calling it Wraithmom. It killed me in one hit.

but I never saw it again..and have only seen a few threads about it on various forums, probably Basil and SW. But yeah.. I'm not lying >< =(

It happened to me also but in Perion while I was finding a rare area I found a fire drake on East mountain VII (before BB), no trolling... a freaking fire drake that OHKOed me... and before I clicked to teleport a bowman appeared and got pwned too lol...

I remember a long time ago back before Masteria came and people used Mushmom as the major way of looking for Ilbis, I would hear people say that to make her spawn, you'd have to kill the two fairies that appear on her map in a certain way.

We know the reasoning behind this. It's because the map has like a max mob limit and killing mobs in the map makes room for Mushmom to spawn if the time for it is over.

Yea! Once when I killed HT, another bigger HT spawned and it cracked my screen and burned my speakers out with its super sonic mega roar. I think it happens when someone encounters a monster not in the data anywhere in the game.

Uh, Red Drakes have existed for quite some time already. They used to be a few levels higher than normal drakes and thus quite strong to characters that would be passing on neighboring areas.

I meaning that I was checking the old Maple versions (around v 0.30 to 0.35) and found that

I just did some research on how others had programmed the CRand32__Random() method. It turns out that the random method is a proprietary one, and the seeds in the random method are dependent upon all random events in the game. Every time some CRand32 method is called the seeds are changed. It would be impossible to isolate any given event as being due to a bad PRNG because each random method cannot be tested individually from the perspective of a user on Maplestory Global. You would have to test it on a PServer to know for sure. The Random() method has no known period and no currently discovered biases.

Interesting. Thanks for the update. I wonder how these anomalies occur then. Maybe we'll never know.

It irks me a bit that their PRNG is a proprietary implementation as that can be subject to programmer error and poor implementations, but there's not much I can do about it.

As Fiel has said, this was actually reality back in Beta days. I can confirm this. I've failed many-a-Kerning PQ because people didn't listen to me back then. Then long after it was fixed, after people had finally been convinced it was a legitimate bug, people then decided that it was never fixed and would squeal at you when you killed something at the edge of the map...even after the bug was long gone.

I'm actually kinda surprised it's still around...that was one of the first obvious bugs, fixed long ago.

I ran into Wraithmom a few times.

I'll check if The White Lady is still on the game.... that myth can't be real, but some people recently told about her... so I will go to bust the myth...

They're called Red Drakes. They used to be near Perion despite being higher leveled enemies.

You can find them in Sleepywood Dungeon these days.
