Maplestory Myths - know any?

This started long, long before the shoes came into being. I had no idea it went on into recent years.

Sorry for bringing up the bait-scrolling topic again... although I don't think it actually works and neither have I any clue about the game's RNG or any other game mechanism I always thought that it was just some weird Math phenomenom.
Something like the Monty Hall problem where probabilities change for the better (must agree that I'd never got that one either).
So I've just drawn a probability-diagram and the chances for failing a 10% Scroll are obviously 90% whereas the chance of failing two scrolls in a row is 81%. (Yeah and I know that one could see these as two different events with 90% failure rate... just check this Monty Hall Thing, since I can't explain it)
However I want to remark that I still don't think that "dump-scrolling" increases your chances (be it because of weird game mechanisms killing math, or just because it's illogical in general)

On topic:
Adding points into LUK increasing your chances to get better drops.
Or something like Bob the snail which isn't real myth either... can't think of anything better at the moment

I remember that!

OMG NOOB WHY YOU KILL SLIME!?

Well I've heard so many claims that 70% potential scroll has a better success rate than 90%. People can be really stupid sometimes. If 10% would be that unlikely to happen, then 10% scrolls would be sold at NPC.

Personally I've used around 20-25 90% scrolls and they have all succeed.

I've KPQ'ed recently and people told me not to kill the slimes. It's still alive.

I know, I've played for 6 years now. I didn't mean boots like the shoes. I meant boots as in getting booted from the party. People adamantly believed this back then, and apparently still do. So I would purposely kill the slimes to piss those idiots off.

I remember an argument about 100%s having a 1/255 or 1/256 chance of fail, and looking at the source code, I think that may be true. I don't know.

Here's a myth for you folks: Does Maplestory run on a PRNG (like Runescape) or on a real RNG (like FE7)?

That isn't a myth...that's just a questions/discussion topic.

I don't think there is any such thing as a true RNG. Almost all "RNGs" that people refer to are actually PRNGs.

I call bull on the scrolls failing to pass.

The problem with the 1 = .9999... argument is that it works in algebra and geometry but does NOT make sense in the realm of computers. 1 and 0.9999... are fundamentally different data types (int and float). Also, any programmer that's worth his salt will NEVER EVER EVER use a float in a comparison operation. It's stupid to do it, and will cause weird runtime anomalies. (For an example of runtime anomalies look here. If you want to compare a float, use Epsilon Tolerance comparison)

If Nexon Korea's programming is any good, they will generate an INT from 0 to 100 (which runs hundreds of times faster than generating a float between 0 and 1) and check to see if that number is less than or equal to the success rate. If so, then the scroll passes. Because the success rate on the 100% scroll is 100 (it's a packed integer in the WZ files), the rolled number will always be less than or equal to the success rate. Notice that there is no float comparisons here. A 100% scroll cannot fail.

I actually have the BMS source code. I could check this.

EDIT: Also that idiot never actually proved in any way, shape, or form that he was right. He never showed any code that would prove that a 100% scroll could fail. He just got all high and mighty that he knows what it means to program then declared himself right because he knows more than everyone else. What a loser.

Here's the source code.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up. Changed the post.

Durex Wrote:I can think up a few.

1. The old free haircut quest. supposedly if you stood on certain parts of the map it would give the "premium" hair (i.e antagonist for males and the black and blonde one for girls)

2. Wearing red skullcap increases scroll success rates.

3?. This is my own myth (ik it's bs) but I have a certain area in the FM entrance that I have always had greater luck whilst using scrolls.

In fact i know all of them are BS, and can prolly be proven wrong very easily.

Maybe I should just add in "Doing X can affect X success rates." =o

Unleashing Wrote:DON'T KILL THE SLIMES AT KPQ, WE GET BAD REWARDS.

Haha I'll add it in.

Do you really think I should add this in? It's really just ragers spreading this around.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions! Biggrin

What I meant was that if the RNG is really random, and has an equal chance to roll between 0 to 100 on every roll, or if it's pseudo and it ends up picking a favored side and an unfavored side and switching them every X amount of rerolls like in tetris. Like the PRNG would pick (between A, B, C, and D) the C as the favored side, the B as the "slightly higher than usual" side, the A as ignored, and the D as the normal 25% chance of appearance, and keep this for like 10 rolls and then switch the sides for the next 10 rolls etc. Whereas a regular RNG would just have 25% chance to all four letters every roll.

There's probably a bigger argument to this that I'm not seeing here, isn't there?

A true RNG only exists conceptually. A computer uses no such thing. All things in a modern computer are deterministic and white box. Computers absolutely cannot be random. That's why only PRNGs make sense on computers. A true RNG may be possible with quantum computing, but that too only exists in concept at the moment.

All PRNGs that are worth anything are tested for randomness (that all numbers are suitably different from each other) and biases (that certain numbers in the output RNG are not prone to be certain numbers). For an example of a stream that cannot be a PRNG, look no further than RC4. The second and third bytes are heavily biased toward zero, so using RC4 is not suitable for a PRNG. However, you could use AES as a PRNG if you wanted to because all numbers are sufficiently random and have very small bias.

The monty hall problem is only valid because each choice eliminates an option from the list of possible outcomes and because there is only one person choosing and one choice that can be made. (There's only one set of doors).

It's so completely unrelated, mathematically, or even logically, to the situation as to be completely irrelevant.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

why can't you guys see that I was joking about GMs

bvxbvzxbvnc

anyway, I remembered one, taking off your clothes for jump quests would better chances of doing better or have the illusion of going faster

edit: previous one is stupid lol
