JUST got a PS3 finally for christmas 2 months ago. You have no idea how long its been since I sunk into a jRPG, let alone a Tales game... I'm going to suck! D:

Should I buy it straight out or just ask for it for my birthday and wait an extra week? Either way, my body is ready.

Still mad they never released Vesperia for PS3, I won't be getting to try that for a while... someone mail me a 360.

I'd say buy it yourself, unless you can be sure that whoever would be getting it for your birthday can actually get their hands on the game. It'll probably be a (very) low print run, and with Tales of the Abyss 3D being sold out everywhere here in Europe I'd get it as soon as possible.

There isn't a release date for Europe right now, isn't there? Right now all I see is "Summer 2012". I already managed to play the demo for about 2 hours total so far, can't get enough of the battle system. At least I still have Abyss to keep me busy until then.

Do you guys ever get sick of RPGs?

No because true RPGs are practically non-existent these days. Now all we get are garbage hack-and-slash/shooters posing as RPGs.

That is exactly why I asked that question. "True" RPGs are what you would call traditional turn-based Japanese RPG, yeah? You'd think you'd want to play the more interactive ones instead of pressing menu buttons and watching everything act out on its own. I know the "Tales of" series doesn't succumb to this, but a lot of people I know play nothing BUT RPGs and it BAFFLES ME. I am BAFFLED. Aside from Pokemans and Skies of Arcadia, traditional JRPGs put me to sleep. Perhaps some of you could help me understand the reasoning...

One thing about the GOOD jRPGs is the sense of discovery. Coming across new, WELL DESIGNED areas was always fun for me. FF7 for example, was really appealing with its steampunk look, some places i'd look around and go 'wait what the heck is tha- ohhhh'. And some towns I'd spend a while looking all over for some crazy situation/npc that could be around the corner While checking out the sights.

In Star Ocean 2, I had a LOT of fun coming across new characters by chance, and with private actions, cause I wanted to see what new situations they would put the characters in. For most of the tales series, 'skits' brought the best out of the pre-determined characters' personality. So it was less about creating your own characters, but really discovering as much as you could about the ones you were given.

In other words, a good jRPG, to me, is one that uses its limitations in characters and interaction with the world as an *asset* and not a weakness. That's probably why I didn't like Tales of the World. The Tales characters finally crossing paths with each other was a huge draw, but running through bland dungeons made of tilesets WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA for the series, especially when your own created character doesn't even have a skill tree to navigate to at least MAKE you want to grind.

Skyrim seems like it has a lot to discover in terms of loot, BUT so much of it looks like standard fantasy fare, the interactions seem rewarding, but the cinematics to reward the situations seems weak, which i suppose is the price of making a game more open ended. I intend to play it eventually thanks to all the praise and perhaps even the story, but i find the 99 forests and log cabins of various size in videos rather drab. Not to mention I never was the biggest fan of first person gameplay.

And the writers love taking those very cliches established right at the start and butcher/deconstruct them somewhere around the middle of the game.
