That third eye girl was moe, it'll be interesting to know what the story behind her is in a number of chapters. And so far, they've set up the exposition to the New World awesomely- Kidd doesn't seem far away and a challenge to Big Mama. I like it.

The anime actually is doing the slow part of the manga justice to be honest. The music is really making it worth watching.

Just caught up to the anime and manga. It took a lot of time, but holy pomegranate I loved it. One Piece just got to be my favorite anime/manga.

On to this chapter.
Hnnnnnnnnnngh Nami. Poor Brook thought it was Laboon. Sea of flames with thunderbolt rain? The New World is really serious business.

As unlikely as it is, Smoker might not be out to get Luffy. 2 reasons I can think of.

He called Luffy Luffy, instead of Strawhat, as Luffy's enemies typically do.

He seems to be pretty loyal to Aokiji. Considering that Aokiji left the marines, and to some extent respects Luffy for the stuff from the War of the Best and for keeping Robin safe, he might have left a message for Luffy.

I like how Zoro has no clue what a "samurai" is. He names his move after jidaigeki and samurai movies and plus, 4kids is all like, "HIS NAME'S ZORO, HE'S JUST LIKE A SAMURAI."

Solid exposition chapter, though. The first thing is that there's intrigue to the setting. The log pose not pointing to the island, "the incident from 4 years ago", the fact that it appeared to be a volcanic and flaming island but didn't realize that it's winter on a different side of the island, why the island is locked up, etc. The second thing he does well is initiating the action: the distress call and the samurai, how legitimate the call is, and the crew now being split up right now. Next, he also makes the plot more complex by adding other points: Smoker being on his way and the fact they're split up and possibly might be split up for a while during the arc. And of course, he winds up leaving good suspense at the end of the chapter by revealing the dragon. It's also worth praising him for the fact that the whirlpool served as an interesting plot device that sent them off on a really different path.

Man I love one piece, I'm never dissapointed by it, even how long the fishman arc was, I feel like it accomplished that "power test" purpose. The anime is actually really good in comparsion for the fishman arc anyway. I can't wait until the new world pomegranate develops, I want to see zoro actually try.

Actually, That's what I kind of love about One Piece. The main character actually loses sometimes, versus Bleach where Ichigo always pulls some bullshit mid-battle power boost or Naruto's insta-power-ups (but theirs is a little better due to the whole team work thing going around, but solo they sometimes pull things out of their ass). I'm not saying that Luffy hasn't had his share of ass-pullage either, but having super OP bad guys leaves space for improvement of the main character(s) and their abilities. Plus, if his dream is to be Pirate King, then he should be able to over power almost all of his opponents, except his rival of course.

Also the New World was supposed to be pretty OP as well, which means that they have to have some sort of challenge even with their new abilities.

Ok... Let's see which challenges Luffy and his crew already have.

Doflamingo and all his crew.
Big Mam and all her crew.
Blackbeard and his crew.
Supernovas and all their crews.
Kaidou and his crew.
All 3 admirals.
All vice-admirals.
Akainu.
Smoker.
Garp.
Koby and the other guy with the knives.
The revolutionnaries (Even if Luffy is kind of on their side, I am pretty sure we'll see some fighting between them and the strawhats at some point).
All of the pirates who were affiliated with Whitebeard. Apart from his original crew, I doubt the ones will keep from having a fight with Luffy because of what he did in the war.
Moria (If he's not dead).
Crocodile.
Kuma.
Sentomarou and the pacifistas.
Mihawk (though he trained Zoro so Im not sure if he's an allie or ennemi now).
The 3 new sichibukai (there has to be some right).
CP9 (They want their revenge).

With all of those guys, do we really need the 4 most OP samurais? That's the point I was trying to make.

ah. I see your point. I'll hold judgement until something ridiculous happens. Anyway, I guess the 4 samurais are the "introductory threats" to ease the readers into the new world; kinda like a sample of what's to come. It does leave a sort of cliff hanger don't it? xD

I don't think majority of those threats are actually threats. If you think about it all the schubukai helped but donflamingo. There's a rival respect there. As for the new world yoki shanks and whitebeard are gurranteed allies. Whitebeard doesn't even care about one piece, as for Kaido he's clearly going to be a big threat.

The samerai were foreshadow'd since moria's arc so this should have been expected.
