Are they worth spending time on? I cant find any list of what they reward apart from mining/herbing bags :/.

Oh yes, I love the tools that increase the ores/herbs drop too, but be ready to be disappointed most of the time; but since it actually don't take that much time to raise them if you do it properly I say it worth the effort.
