Largest Maplestory hacking website being sued by Nexon America and Nexon Korea Corp.

Pretty sure when it comes to the copyright laws, one of the elements they assess is 'The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work' aka how much money it can make.

They pretty much lost their innocence when it comes to that. The damage most of these hacks is much easier to prove, unlike something purely appreciative like fanart.

Not that I expect anything to come of this. It'll just make these sites go underground. We'll still have to deal with the same hacking bull pomegranate we always have. Just on a smaller scale, maybe.

This isn't buying drugs online, this is buying hacks.
I think you severely overestimate the caution of the clientele of these sites.

It is not like they could possibly win against Nexon in court either. Nexon could just roll over on them with their vast funds and bury the site owners for the rest of thier days.

At the very least, Nexon could drag it out so all the money that these people have made gets burned on court fees.

I say they'll win though. The precedent has been set.

Nexon need to fix the game before trying to blame other for every pomegranate that happen on maple.

Without a complete overhaul, there's no way to completely prevent hacks in their game.
Even then, they'd still exist.
No game is unhackable.

They are essentially setting an example using that website which will make players much less likely to attempt to distribute hacks as consequences are involved lol. That will at least flush out some number of people.

Nexon should NOT win this. Writing software that works in conjunction with other software should not be construed as copyright infringement. As much as I hate hacks on Maple, stuff like this is why we are against SOPA (trying to take down websites for poor reasons).

Just to clarify that I wasn't suggesting every hacker be hunted down and be prosecuted, that is ridiculous lol. My point was, for both posts, that even though this may take out a big head of the snake, unless they follow up on it in game, the damage is already done. Also the fear factor becomes a huge part of this as not only the distributors but the users might even become hesistant to risk this.

It is in their best interest but this is not the way to do it. No laws have been broken. If I wrote a software that improved the speed of Windows by 1000% and made a lot of money from it, should Microsoft be able to sue me? Nexon should not be able to dictate what software people run on their computer in conjunction with their software except by refusing service (banning). Just like Microsoft cannot tell me what software I choose to run on Windows. To do so WOULD be anticompetitive.

After reading all your posts together, I truly hope the hackers hire you as their defense attorney because Nexon would win in a landslide.
Also in the future, I hope you will not try to interpret what can and cannot be done in the court of law because it is a waste of other people's time trying to respond to your ridiculous understanding of the civil court system.

People generally do not change opinions that strong that quickly, but it is still beating a dead horse, yes. If they haven't seen their error yet, they won't, so it's a waste of time to continue bashing them, just adds fuel to the fire.

Nexon has a decent chance with this one if they follow through and are as aggressive about it as they sound (and as they should be). They will get a much better lawyer at the very least, and while I generally would not support "Johnnie Cochran"ing some poor losers, there are always exceptions to the rule, and this is one of them. They have been screwing with this game for too long, they need to be dealt with as harshly as possible to scare the pomegranate out of anyone else that even thinks of trying to take their place.

In general, not being able to worry too much about hacks helps the company devote time and resources into... actually improving the game for once. *gasp*

Of course, outsourcing security could work too. Except it hasn't as Hackshield hasn't really stopped anything.
