Yes, Actually Microsoft WOULD be able to sue you, Because you modified their code without their permission, and profited from it. THATS WHAT A COPYRIGHT IS. A copyright is in place to prevent other people from stealing the ideas, products, and usage of whatever is being copyright. Whats going on here is not comparable to your scenario. The hackers are not making Maplestory better, they're making it WORSE. They're ruining the entire game for people and not caring about it. The point also stands that Nexon's Terms of Service (Which you automatically agree to, regardless of if you read it or not when you sign up) Allows nexon to take whatever actions they deem nessicary to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

Doesn't mean they do. The agreement that seems to be in place is that Microsoft allows people to create programs for their Operating System, as long as it doesnt

A) Modifiy the Source code in such a way that it could create a security risk
B) Does not infringe on any existing copyrights for what Microsoft already has in place
C) Does not contain malicious code etc...

But again, that scenario is pointless, because it doesnt apply to what nexon is doing.

It is in their best interest but this is not the way to do it. No laws have been broken. If I wrote a software that improved the speed of Windows by 1000% and made a lot of money from it, should Microsoft be able to sue me? Nexon should not be able to dictate what software people run on their computer in conjunction with their software except by refusing service (banning). Just like Microsoft cannot tell me what software I choose to run on Windows. To do so WOULD be anticompetitive.

So its totally fine to make a program to force a program and its server to act in ways it should never act, causing it to crash. (that itself is cyberterrorism) How about if i ran a program to make my ebank account duplicate its funds?

sarcasm aside.. Nexon has every right to do this. Find whatever laws they can to throw at them because that is what those sites deserve.. It isn't a matter of big corp vs the little guy. Hell no, its more like Big corp vs the big fat leech sucking what it can for what it doesn't deserve.

They can, but they have no reason to. Most software that runs on windows does no harm either to Microsoft or its customers, and there being a plethora of applications for Windows actually helps sell Windows itself.

They can and should (idk whether they bother) sue people who write viruses and other malware for Windows, because those do harm customers and deter them from buying or using Windows.

Freedom of speech is not absolute. It is limited where it causes unreasonable harm to others. That's why you're not allowed to yell "Fire" in a crowded theatre, or make noise after a certain hour near where people live, or lie in advertising your product, or spread false information about your competition, and so on and so forth. And yeah, it also doesn't cover breaking into a casino and robbing it, which is essentially what hacking MapleStory is.

If this succeeds. I can't wait for the massive uproar about how we can't do pomegranate now, because "our Hacks" are gone / severely crippled.

besides all that has been said on this thread, which is pretty much how i feel (is the killer site really dead? i don't check that one) i have to add though:

depends on how you see it, if they answered inmediately, then yes, but seeing how nexon works, it seems more like the time they spend fixing these is the only time they spend working, given how it takes them days/months or even years to fix stuff.

Theoretically speaking, if they aren't bugging Nexon Korea every week for help with hacking problems, they would have more time to bug Nexon Korea over glitches and the like instead, things to make the game more stable.

Technically, this would be considered the beginning of Nexon "cutting off the snake's head", so to speak. If they continue removing the script creators as they pop up, not only will there no longer be unpatched hacks, people will stop creating new ones for fear of being prosecuted. Sometimes fear tactics really are the only way to deal with something that's gotten this out of hand and has been happening for this long. Personally I think they aren't going too far. Just because it's "behind a computer screen on a kid's game" doesn't make it OK. They are making a lot of money off of someone else's game and ruining a TON of people's experiences with said game in the process.

i don't see them sueing cam, cam is the one that find almost every exploit that exist on maple, creator of vac hacks, and clearly stated he breached nexon database (a few times)

I know for a fact that is the case, every group like this makes an absolute truckload. For a game this large...I can only imagine. Two of my friends on Diablo II created scripts and sold items there, they BOTH make over $100K a year, one of them owns an entire site now and makes over $500K a year just off of running around 200 bots 24/7 out of his house, not even counting the script sales.

Oh how I wish they could pool all these resources and funds into also improving the game's infrastructure. The glitches and server issues won't magically disappear if they win against the hacking sites.
