Because we have last call at 1:00 or 2:00 (which is a legal obligation) and there's no point in staying open if no one is drinking. That's why house parties are superior.

it's just retarded. It was 3 am yesterday and everything was closed. Ridiculous. People don't even have transport at that time of the night

Went to the bar, cause a friend asked if I wanted to hang out. Met my friend's ex, and she introduced me to her current boyfriend. I told the guy he looked like Leonidas from "300", just to be a funny pimento. He laughed and said "Hey, there's a Leonidas mod for Skyrim". The rest of the night from 10 PM - 1 AM at the bar, 4 out of 7 of us were talking about Skyrim related sh`it while drinking.

I drove home afterwards, and made myself a pitcher of alcohol. Bourbon mixed with rootbeer and pepsi, and I put some ice in it. I proceeded to drink by myself from 1:15 AM - 4:15 AM or so (while playing Skyrim), and slept then. Woke up around 9 AM, and had to get ready for work. Almost puked this morning. Great night and a great day.

Can't say for certain but I'd wager it's to keep people from mindlessly drinking until the wee hours of the morning. Once you get drinking, especially at a bar or a club, it's easy to lose track of time. Early last call is sort of a reminder that "hey, some of you have to work tomorrow and it's pretty late."
