Quote:N Korean leader Kim Jong-il dies
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died, state-run TV has announced.
His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.
The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work. Kim Jong-il was 69 and believed to have suffered ill health for many years.
The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.
His son Kim Jong-un has been suggested as a likely successor although nothing has yet been announced in the highly secretive state.
Nothing too detailed just yet, but this was all I could find.

Quote:North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, 69, has died
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died. He was 69.
Kim's death was announced Monday by state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.
Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media.
The leader, reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine, was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.
The news came as North Korea prepared for a hereditary succession. Kim Jong Il inherited power after his father, revered North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994.
In September 2010, Kim Jong Il unveiled his third son, the twenty-something Kim Jong Un, as his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.

Well, that explains why Mazefind was going absolutely nuts over Twitter just now.
Wonder what this means for North Korea. It's one thing to step down from power (IIRC), it's another thing entirely to die if people see him as some sort of national symbol. I would guess.

Here's the thing (my analysis)
Now since ****bag Kim Jong Il is dead, everything's going to focus on his 3rd son, who has been appointed his successor for over an year now. The big question is...can that son still maintain the grip on power like his father could (and be able to keep the family dynasty alive?) If he can't do that, power struggle could happen, and any internal unrest sparked by a power struggle could play into the hands of South Korea and the United States.
And while I like to see communist North Korea put out of existence and South Korea re-uniting with North Korea, don't jump to conclusions so fast.

I still don't have much optimism, but I hope things go well.

The problem is we have no information on his son, the successor. He's actually believed to be worse than his father, war hungry.

And now it seems all there is to do is play the waiting game. Too early to party imo. We don't know what negatives could happen as a result of what could happen because of this.

To be honest, the uncertainly at this point worries me more than the era he ruled in.

This might cause more trouble both internally for N. Korea and externally outside that country than people originally presume.
Already the economy around that region's taken a hit o_o
That's like, totes awk, bro.

It's hard to imagine anything being worse than the rule of the fortuitously deceased. Even if the son is more violent or war hungry, if he starts an ill advised conflict that leads directly to the swift fall of his regime; that's ultimately a good thing for the people of North Korea, who suffer unimaginably as things stand.
It's a shame we didn't shoot him a long time ago.

Can celebrate now...but I'm not going to hold my breath. He's just going to be replaced by someone who's potentially even worse....
