It seems like every hip-hop star uses that same vocal effect these days.
I agree.
Boa's non-english songs are best but her songs in english has never been really good which is kinda saying her status is getting her somewhere and not so much her accent.

Lana♥ Wrote:You know how Americans are with mainstream music. She wouldn't stand a chance if she made a "unique" song. It would just be a waste of money, at least with this type of music she has a chance.
Utada's English album got virtually no promotion, and it debuted at like #160 She's releasing a second English album soon so we will see how that does.
If she has to change how she "makes music" in an atempt to appeal to the American Mainstream market, then she is not a real musician. What I've realized is that American's don't know what they like in music, so they let Mtv tell them what they like, and artist that want to be featured on Mtv change how they make music to appeal to them.
For example, my little sister (she's 8) is in love with the Jonahs Brothers, not because they play songs she likes, but because the band and thier "music" is force fed to her, and millions of other little kids, by the Disney Channel. Do the Jonahs Brothers write thier own music? Sure, but I bet not without the help of Disney.
BoA is already successful in her own right, but if she has to change her music to appeal to a market instead of making music she loves, then she has lost all her integrety.

^ um the Asian market is completely different compared to the American market. Her english single Eat You Up isn't something too far off of something she would normally do, but the song has a more American mainstream appeal. Most of her songs are either pop/ballad/urban, out of those three it's obvious which type would be chosen to break her into the U.S market. Also It's quite common actually, artists release different songs as singles depending on the country/region.
I mean seriously what would happen if an Asian debuted in the states with a song like this

well it might succeed cause Gocchin is amazing~~~~

It doesn't matter what market they come from though, as long as they make good music, it will sell. Bands like Metallica (USA), The Beatles (England), The Rolling Stones (England), Nickelback (Canada), AC/DC (Australia), and U2 (Ireland) have proved that it doesn't matter where you come from. As long as the music you make is good, everyone will love it. These bands have played concerts around the world that have sold-out to 10's of thousands of people. In places like Japan, Brazil, Germany, India, Etc. and didn't change what they did to appeal to anyone.
I guess what I am trying to say is BoA sucks, although the video you posted is better than the one she has released in the USA. Only because she isn't trying to please another market by changing her style. Also, with all the people in love with Anime's, and Asian culture, I could see her having a good sized cult following in the US if she released that video instead.

^ True but those bands you listed are rock bands, rock music is a lot more universal imo so they don't have to go through all those changes. The only pop artists I can think of who have a HUGE worldwide following are like..Britney Spears, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Cher?, & Christina Aguilera. All of them are from the U.S, there aren't that many overseas pop singers who have been able to achieve continued success in America/ the whole world. If BoA is able to succeed it would be quite an accomplishment, even if her music sucks
in other news I'm glad you liked Maki's song better than BoA's \o/ I agree about the anime thing though. If she would get a deal with places like gaia online (lol) or even get the theme to a anime to promote her songs she would probably get well known. She doesn't do that kind of music anymore though :>

I would say that the first Asian to make it into the US charts is Coco Lee.
She didn't make it big, but she did well...
BoA... I like her Korean songs mainly. Girls on Top was a good song to dance to... I actually know the moves o.o
Edit: just listened to the clip. I couldn't finish it. OMG, she's like... younger than me? O.O
I agree with Throws... that song needs serious help...
Lana, you are talking about Goto Maki... ex Morning Musume?? WHOA!

Wow they really photoshopped her pictures since she's really short o_o
I think the song is okay actually. It's really catchy after a while.
If she stuck with one of her more teenybopper songs she would probably fail.

I would consider them to have more a "cult following" like PUFFY (Puffy Ami Yumi) sure some people know about them and their material gets released locally over here but I don't think any of their releases even made the top 40.
@ pandapple omg if BoA had the Brit Brit fans behind her she would totally succeed.

BoA's first live performance of Eat You Up for Youtube Live Tokyo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8cA45bqCl0
I thought the performance wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either.
Repetitive moves for a repetitive song. I liked her other song performances, though.
BoA will also be performing live in Times Square on Dec. 3
omg good luck boa ;-;

you could tell she was a bit uncomfortable performing Eat You Up. Those Japanese songs were a lot better. it wasn't that bad for a first live of the song tho.
