Please be aware that the 8:00 PM curfew remains in effect. We are aware that next week is the traditional Halloween torch lighting and festival. However, until Rue shipments reach quota, all civic events and celebrations have been canceled.
Any adults found out of doors after 8:00 PM on the evening of October 31 without proper authorization will be arrested.
This is ridiculous! Von yelled, looking up at the notice. They cant cancel Halloween!
Jun tried to shush his brother. Quiet, Von! You never know when the Black Wings might be about!
Ulrika chimed in. They can cancel anything they want, Von. Theyre in charge. And youre going to get us in a lot of trouble if you keep talking like that.
Despite the truth of her statement, this particular announcement had hit Von and his legendary sweet tooth especially hard.
Maybe they wouldnt arrest us, Jun said quietly. It does say that any adults found outside would be arrested, not kids.
Vons face brightened.
Oh no, Von, Ulrika said quickly. Not again. I know that look. Naturally it would be up to her to figure out how to get everyone together and a way to pull it off. She was the brains of their little outfit after all.
There were days she wished she wasnt so smart.
Masks
Vashta shook her head at the memo Lux had just placed on the desk.
Were cancelling Halloween? Vashta said. Thats ridiculous.
Lux, the captain of the Black Wings Commission on Public Safety glared at his second-in-command. Comments like that make me wonder about your commitment to our Masters cause. Lux said coldly.
Vashta said nothing. In truth, there were a lot of days recently when she questioned her own dedication. She had joined the Black Wings to be on the front line, fighting for a world of peace and justice. The Black Wings had promised that such world would follow the resurrection of their Lord. Instead she had joined a movement that was growing more and more cruel. She felt trapped under a petty police lunatic who enjoyed bullying helpless miners. She knew others under her command that felt the same way. This was not what she had signed up for.
Trust me, Vashta, Lux said. This is my best plan yet. The enemies of our Lord will stop at nothing to undermine His rule. Something as symbolic as lighting that idiotic torch in the town square? They wouldnt miss that opportunity. When they show up, we will crush them once and for all.
Vashta sighed. This was going to be a waste of time.
Treats
Ulrika had to admit that their little adventure had gone better than expected. A few days of tracking the guards had revealed their patrol routes and the kids had been able to plot out a route that would avoid them completely. Their group of three grew to dozens as the night progressed, and Von, dressed as the hero Aran, could feel the ancient legends power as the kids snuck from house to house asking for candy.
Some time later, their bags loaded down with goodies, Ulrika whispered to Von, We did it! We got away with it! Lets get everybody home.
Were not quite done. Von said, pulling out a small firelighter.
Are you insane? Ulrika asked. Well never get near the torch!
Von didnt bother to answer. He turned and began walking toward the center of town.
Unmasked
Get down on the ground! Lux was shrieking, waving his crossbow frantically.
This was the prey he had been so intent on capturing? Vashta looked at the costumed kids. The leader, a young man holding a toy staff in one hand and a lighter in the other, was looking at the Black Wing guards, his expression a mixture of fear and defiance.
You cant cancel Halloween! Von said in a high shaky voice. Youre always walking around bullying people, and its just not right! He took a tentative step toward the ceramic torch held in the statues grasp.
Luxs crossbow steadied, aiming straight at the boy. We decide whats right, boy! he shouted.
Is he serious? Vashta thought. No, not even Lux is crazy enough to shoot down
If he takes another step, open fire on the whole group! the captain shouted.
Hes serious! Vashta realized.
There was a long moment of tension, then Von took another step.
Fi Lux began, but before he could squeeze the trigger, an axe sliced the air, shattering his crossbow. He looked up into the flaming eyes of his second-in-command.
This is wrong! Vashta said. Sir.
What is this? Lux said. Treason? Black Wings, kill the traitor, then finish the rebels!
No! Vashta yelled to her soldiers. This was not why we became Black Wings! To me, soldiers! There was a moment of hesitation and then the eight other members of the police squad placed themselves between the children and Lux.
Youre all traitors! Lux screamed, walking slowly backward. Ill have you all executed!
Thanks maam. A young, scared-looking boy dressed as an orange mushroom was looking up at her even as the brave one who had led them lit the torch. She smiled down at him, and then looked to her followers.
Black Wings! she cried. We were formed to fight for order and justice and we were lied to! Its not too late for us to redeem ourselves. She put her hand on the orange mushroom boys shoulder.
Lets start by taking these kids home!
