I saw this as someone's comment on facebook and I thought it was pretty funny

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It's time we put thing in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit! We can get that for minimum wage. That's right. Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 minutes off for lunch and planning time - that equals 6 1/2 hours). Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to babysit their children. Now, how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations. LET'S SEE.... That's $585 X 180= $105,300 per year. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries). What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year. Wait a minute --there's something wrong here! There sure is! The average teacher's salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$ 9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) It's saying paying teachers to babysit kids for the time kids are in school minimum wage per kid would pay them more money than the average teacher salary.

But...but...what if you don't need to have a baby-sitter. What if you want to learn too? And I mean "learn" not lolschool teaching.

Don't get me wrong, some teacher are good, but some just throw a book at your (literally) and give an "A" to the students that clean the classroom for them...Pretty sure more money isn't going to solve any problems...

The idea is that money will solve the problem by attracting better people to the profession. Right now some schools have to take pretty much anyone willing to fill the position. If there were more applicants, schools could let go the incompetent and burned-out teachers.

At my high school, people don't learn anything. Teachers should be paid exactly as the post implies because that's what they do. They spend more time trying to get the class settled down enough to pay attention for maybe 20 minutes and then everything just turns into a "GET YOUR ASS BACK IN THAT SEAT BOY" "FUK U TEECH! IMA BE A GANGSTA WEN I GROW UP SO FUK U"

yah pretty much happens most of the time (not in AP obviously). My school went to pomegranate when my class left. They've had a bomb threat and an arson all within 2 weeks of each other. YAY. They need to motivate the kids, not the teachers.

Not to mention there would be less burned out teaches because they wouldn't have financial troubles along with their demanding job

You either didn't read the entire post or didn't understand.

The point is that teachers are being paid less than a babysitter would be. So by saying "the teachers should be paid exactly as the post says" you'd be rewarding them for doing nothing.

Though I do agree, teachers do deserve more.

Agreed that teachers should be paid more, especially the good ones. If you guys think these numbers are bad, according to my prof, my university pays sessional lecturers to teach 100 people classes roughly 35k a year, which is absolutely horrible.

That being said, I would be fine if teachers were paid based on results: The better teachers get paid more instead of all teachers getting paid a handsome amount for doing a crappy job.

Yes.

Awesome post, really. Of course there's obviously lousy teachers that shouldn't really be paid that much, but I think the good ones are really underpaid.

And New Jersey thinks it's a bright idea to make teacher's salaries dependent on test grades (not standardized test grades, regular school tests). Thank god it's starting next year when I leave this school.

I believe that what they need to do is get rid of the suckish teachers and then pay the good ones more.

I still feel like all my teachers are good for is watching me work on my own for several hours a week. 20 hours outside of class teaching myself the subject vs 4 hours in class per week just makes their job seem useless.

There isn't an easy way to do it yet, which is probably why nobody has.

30 students? What the pineapple? I was in fifth grade and my teachers taught 50 students.

Huh. I can never take the posts with capitalization and exclamation marks out the ass seriously.

From what I've seen my mother doing, balancing her own classes at college and running an AP chem class all day, this post is kind of insulting. She works her ass off day in and day out, then finds time to take care of my dumb ass, which is a massive hassle all in its self.

You might disagree, Kevin, but Im a believer that a good teacher is able to make a bad class do well. Good students will get the grades regardless of who's teaching them. You don't need a good teacher to get them to do well. A good teacher is measured by what they can do with the poorer students in the class and make them excel (to some degree).

Yeah. I get good grades naturally, even with an awful teacher, but they can also control their class.
