Controversy erupts over Campus Republicans @ UC Berkeley over their racist bake sale

thegreatone Wrote:Those weren't the only things they were fighting for. It still isn't equal affirmative action or not its not even close to being equal. Racism is built into institutions its no longer that white guy on the street yelling the n-word, I'd much rather have that in place of what we have now.
It's not about you all owing us anything its giving us the same damn oppertuinites you all are afforded for sitting on your ass and having white skin. which sadly probably wont ever happen.

Then please tell me what, you were fighting for because I assure you, it isn't the right to be lazy. And sir, you may want to change your view point to what your parents fed you out of spite of past history, because this whole, white=lazy thing you keep spouting out is complete bull sh`it.

American's treated you like sh`it, like they treated the irish, the italians, the scottish, the oriental, and every other culture because we didn't consider you citizens. It was different with African Americans I'm aware, however, the "oppurtunites" notice the U not the E, you're speaking of, are of people who worked for their oppurtunities. That's why we were so against communism because your work is worthless, it amounts to nothing.

So before you simply state "because you're white everything was handed to you", maybe you should consult my family who worked their ass off harder than you, mind you, while minorities beg for pity checks, which believe you me, only enables the lazy attitude.

And I'm sorry sir but you saying "we demand the same oppurtunities you received for being white" seems quite goddam ignorant, and quite goddam demanding for some imaginary debt we owe you, especially from some false reality that you believed existed. Sorry to bust your bubble but everyone suffered the great depression, and everyone is suffering this recession.

The posted prices don't necessarily mean anything. Did they let people claim to be any 'race' they wanted? If they were refusing people the 'black' price based on the color of their skin that's kinda racist.

also itt white privilege

Sigh, here we go again lets get one thing straight chances are my parents worded a lot harder then yours so unless you know me personally or my family I'll have to ask you to shut the pineapple up. We were against Communism simply because the extra effort didn't amount to anything different from the lazy person there's a difference between that not getting the chance to put in the effort. You have to put in effort to get where you want to be we have to put in effort to get to where you started from then even more effort to get to the same goal your after. I bet your one of those guys who didn't get in the school you wanted and blamed affirmative action for your own lazy ass or you just didn't put in as much effort as the other people who applied. Really getting quite sick of your personal attacks grow up buddy and stop assuming things about people over the internet. So let this be the last time I freaking speak to you.

They were fighting for equality, equality does not just mean voting rights just look at public schools in this country and compare them if you call that equality then your an idiot.

Stay on topic we aren't talking about money in general were talking about education and educational oppturines.

@below the wealthy white men are the ones who made the institutions they way they are today your not at fault but by being in those institutions you receive said benefits. I have nothing against white people nor am I holding a grudge for events that happened in the past. Like I said before I would much rather it be a bunch of racist white people calling me the n-word while I'm attending the same school as them learning on an equal footing because then I could just laugh at them and keep no learning and doing what I gotta do. Instead the way the damn intuitions are built pineapple people over

Considering your ability to spell, I'd have to disagree. And I would love to challenge that. In fact I'd double that by challenging that my grandfather did. Just to give you a f`uckin fair chance.

So what you're saying is whites are lazy because you had to put more effort? You're comparing whites vs blacks, which is stupid when it comes to America, because every immigrant had to start below an american citizen and work hard to get where they were. White, Latino, or black, it was all the same at that point.

I'm glad you concede the verbal ass whooping I gave you, none the less, your assumption is just retaliating with a hypocritical statement you were just criticizing me on. I have nothing against minorities, all power to them, what I have against is dumb asses. I hate how I look on the internet/news of minority families buying 2 million dollar houses on balloon contracts and expecting Obama to bail them out, because they weren't smart enough to realize they were being scammed. So they get to live in these 2 million dollar houses, with an adjusted morgage while my parents are paying hand over fist on there 30 year fix, which they can afford mind you, but why does the cars salesman get to go weep on national news about his 12 acre backyard putting him debt, while honest families don't get any slack what so ever. Were rewarding the irresponsible, and that's wrong. That's my pet peeve if you must know, I havent even attended college yet, I'm making the state pay for my CPA license/accounting degree in a good year (well 70% of it).

Lastly all of this is on topic because the real controversy is reverse racism, not just student loans and sh`it like that. It should solely be based on income, or start up specific grants/loans for whites, the recession is hurting everyone, period.

Thegreatone Wrote:They were fighting for equality, equality does not just mean voting rights just look at public schools in this country and compare them if you call that equality then your an idiot.

You retorting to public school's is idiotic in itself. America isn't anywhere near the top tier when it comes to public schooling, only colleges. And name two public schools that would fit your comparison? Oh and also they have to have the same amount of funding, which is a local city problem, not a national one.

Thegreatone Wrote:@below the wealthy white men are the ones who made the institutions they way they are today your not at fault but by being in those institutions you receive said benefits.

What institutions are you referring to that gave specific white men the edge, besides any form of politics?

No person deserves that level of harassment, period. The fact of the matter is, you'll be the "Hey the black kid!" until there are no race specific benefits. Green is the universal color right now and should be the only color to determine anything.

Yes, your parents. Your PARENTS. Not -YOU-. See the difference? Your parents, if they did indeed work hard through life, have the right to complain about this pomegranate. You do not, because you have much and more than what they had. They may consider that a victory, and indeed it is, but the fact of the matter remains that BECAUSE they were able to gain you these benefits, you have no right to complain for more as you are already in the upper echelon when it comes to privilege, whether you want to admit it or not. When your parents were your age, they did not, but now, you do. Stop complaining about having things better than most others and just eat your damn cake.

The acceptance via race is pretty unfair to white people too. I know several white kids who are more disadvantaged than some of the blacks/latinos/asians that I know. The university shouldn't be able to just go "Oh! He's a white guy! they have more stuff and chances we can't accept that when we have a poor middle income *insert minority here* waiting in line! We need more of them in here, not those white people!"

actually, acceptance by race isn't fair to anyone. Who the hell in their right mind would want this? wtp? That's like saying "you can't play on my baseball team because you wear glasses" (yeah I had this happen to me in middle school and I still kicked their asses at baseball- tell me I can't hit anything more than an infield single will you. Triple through centerfield peach!).

Who is complaining I never said me you took what i was saying to that other guy out of context. I was comparing my parents to his I never once included myself in the whole must benefit from affirmative action thing.

@the other guy: Pointing out one spelling mistake therefore I cant spell, just lol

We are talking about now not even everyone was an immigrant stay in this time period please.

Concede my ass more like not wanting to deal with a child over the internet take it as you will.

We aren't talking about idiots spending money they don't have look at the damn topic of the thread THIS IS ABOUT EDUCATION god damn it get that in your head. I agree with what you said people of any color who do that are retards and don't deserve pomegranate however we aren't talking about them. Last time I checked this discussion was about affirmative action and how some people feel its an unfair advantage. Compared to what people have had to go through your an idiot to say that.

It does not matter that they are not at the top tier the fact that most go to public schools and those schools are pineappleed up ever been to an inner city school my man. Until then shut the pineapple up. When the trend is like this all around the nation you bet your ass it's a problem.

You can start with housing markets after WWII seeing as public schools are mainly funded through income taxes. That's when it starts to become more apparent.

Affirmative actions does need to go though its like giving a guy with lung cancer cough syrup for his cough instead of curing the damn cancer. However blaming it because you didn't try hard enough is stupid. If your so worried about it apply to a historically black college and be on the receiving end I guess.

UCB Chancello Wrote:Last week an incident occurred that was contrary to the Principles of Community we espouse as a campus <http://www.berkeley.edu/about/principles.shtml>. The Berkeley College Republicans (an ASUC sponsored organization) publicized an "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" that prices baked goods according to a person's ethnicity, race, or gender. This event has moved the campus community into dialogue, because it was hurtful or offensive to many of its members.

Illustrating the breadth of the offense taken, last night the ASUC Senate unanimously passed a resolution condemning the methodology used by BCR and urging respectful conduct by all student organizations. The administration firmly endorses those sentiments. It is our sincere hope that the strong reactions generated by the proposed bake sale provide a vivid lesson that issues of race, ethnicity, and gender are far from resolved, and very much a part of lived experience here and now.

The Principles of Community are not about political positions. They require a consciousness of the potential effect of words or deeds on others: a positive intent not to hurt, offend, or denigrate others while expressing a reasoned position. Regardless what policies or practices one advocates, careful consideration is needed on how to express those opinions. The issue is not whether one thinks an action is satirical or inoffensive, the issue is whether community members will be intentionally - or unintentionally - hurt or demeaned by that action. The same applies to the way we interact with each other, whether academically, professionally, or socially.

If we, as a community, do not live with these expectations, then our Principles of Community (which the community authored) are just words on a page. The administration can urge, but not mandate, a person to behave with civility. We can express our disappointment or condemnation when respectfulness is abused. It is the community who must hold each other accountable for behaviors that do not reflect our communal values.

Forbearance and consciousness of how one's actions may affect others should always be a strong consideration. We celebrate the exchange of ideas through the freedoms we share as a nation, but intelligent debate is based on mutual respect. Freedom of speech is not properly exercised without taking responsibility for its impact. Taking that responsibility does not negate the freedom, it brings an enhanced humanity to it.

Sincerely,

Robert Birgeneau, Chancellor
Gibor Basri, Vice Chancellor - Equity & Inclusion
Harry LeGrande, Vice Chancellor - Student Affairs

I figured since I was a UCB student I'd let everyone know what they just sent us regarding the incident. Take with it what you will. Apparently Free speech and protest are now offensive to people because it had to do with race.

Man...sorry you were forced to read that farce of a letter in the first place...
People just need to grow some balls and do what it right and not what looks good, for a change.

OMG! Something was offensive to some people! Moreover, the culprit were over privileged WASP's! Condemn their lack of open-mindedness!

Btw, WASP's are White, Anglo-Saxon People.

After a day of no internet, I come in and see a plethora of sh'it just piled up so suddenly. Wt'f guys, keep it civil please. X_X

Though I'd like to thank Worthyness for posting that message up. At least we get to see how the UCB administration is reacting to the controversy going nuclear in national news.

In other news, millions of students a year are rejected from scholarships purely because their skin is white.

It really don't surprise me that people find this offensive. I am more surprised that people haven't heard of this before. It happens all the time, and groups of people, mostly conservatives, have been doing it for a while.

Rick Wrote:In other news, millions of students a year are rejected from scholarships purely because their skin is white.
People are not just rejected from schools and scholarships just because their skin is white, but also because of gender and sexual orientation. Just because I put "prefer not to say" on my application for my sexual orientation and nationality, I get less of a chance to enter a school in California than if I were to say I was a gay minority. Go figure...

I still find it funny that a lot of comments on many of the new articles is OMG this sale is racist but the bill is definitely NOT racist.

Except by using race as a criteria in judgement, that is, by definition, being racist.

Perfect place to use this wonderful term "reverse discrimination."

I really just hate people that use that word, then again I just hate people.

I'm not surprised at all that something this half-assed comes out of UC Berkeley.

Trying to make a point by trying to make people mad is probably...the worst thing you could attempt. "These bees are on my property, I will shake their hive to prove a point" This is basically the same thing, only simplified.

Did you even bother to read why they are doing this? Or did you just go based on something that you head and assume some nutsies were being racist?

Really? I'm intrigued to hear this one. Like what? I bet I could refute it. So I'm just oblivious to my own spoonfeeding now because it actually happened to me?

Yeah, people get legitimately screwed over a lot, but I think some of the time people are just looking to join in the bitching to get something they don't deserve anyway.
