I got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite today and... it's not really what I expected. It seems fun but I am pineappleing TERRIBLE. I can't beat the Giadrome in THE VERY FIRST QUEST. Also my weapon keeps dulling. Is there any way to see what enemies are before attacking them or is it just about taking your best guess?
Give me all your best advice.

Can't help much at all only played 3 with two analog sticks and easier gathering of materials(?)...Other than that learn how the monsters attack and dodge accordingly. There are charts online that show weak spots on the monsters and guides to help you chose a weapon to use against it.
You will be changing your weapon type you use a lot depending on the monster you are fighting. If one weapon isn't working try a different one. Sharpness decreases when you attack or block with your weapon stronger weapons will have more sharpness if it runs low use a whetstone to fix it since bouncing sucks.
If that game has barrels bombs in it start using them after trapping a monster in a trap. It should make it easier to fight some but don't waste your time with them on weaker monsters..also trapping monsters gets you more rewards but is somewhat difficult since you have to trap them when they are almost dead then use tranq bombs on them.
Only way to know about your enemy is by using the internet game doesn't really tell you even on tri it doesn't tell you anything of real use.

Step 1: Try all the weapons
Step 2: Use the best weapon your used to
Step 3: if you aren't using a female your doing it wrong

Hah, my friend just got it recently and has been playing it in class all the time with another friend. Looks really interesting, but I don't really have much time to play these days, so... tell me how it turns out for you, I guess?

I hate controlling camera. Using the claw is painful for me and would gladly buy that PSP-3001 that released with 3rd if it weren't 300$+ now. ._.;
Anyhoo, the game is pretty difficult at first and I can see how it's not for everyone. Adding to what Derosis said, most monsters are weak to the head. Sword and Shield is the best weapon for a beginner since you can use items even with your weapon out. Stupid Royal Ludroths seem so much harder in Tri than 3rd demo. ;~;
But yeah, I think my friend ditched MH for God Eater. More hack and slashy or something compared to this.
