With a desktop, you can (more easily) use multiple monitors. I have two monitors at work and I miss that when I'm on my laptop.

MetaSeraphim Wrote:And I know despite the fact that my system is outdated it is still possible to get a better video/graphics card. You really need to give more information. Given the age of that CPU model, you should specify whether the motherboard supports PCI-E or only AGP. [ If I had to guess, it has an AGP slot (if the motherboard supports any external graphics card). ] Also, power output of the power supply would be helpful so that no one recommends a card that would overly stress that. Finally, if any of the games that you are wanting to play are recent (e.g., <2-3 yrs.), then you'll be much better off just saving your money and building/buying a new computer.

More to the point Meta, just about ANYTHING will be better than what you have. More specifically, you would need to find a card that still works for your system. Beyond that, you could probably find a new/er computer thats 5 times better for ~300 bucks.

What is your current budget?:
$400-600 What part are you looking for? Why do you need it?: Everything, have a mouse . Upgrading to a desktop(10% chance id get another laptop) from an old laptop. What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. If you have a pre-built, include the make and model. its a hp pavilion dv9000 laptop, about 4-5 years old. How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter? General home use, school work, gaming. WoW, League of Legends, Starcraft 2. If you live anywhere other than the United States, please indicate your country. In the US. I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundl...mbo.752648. Its at the top end of what I would like to spend but with my very limited knowledge seems to fit what I would like to do. Any opinions?

Birdie Wrote:What is your current budget?: That rig you posted doesn't have a discrete graphics card. Without that, you might have trouble with the gaming part. I suggest building something around: the Intel i5 2500K (the K is very important) Just to give you an idea on the price. I've recently built a machine for a friend for about $1100 CAD, it had the i5 2500K and a Nvidia 560TI, just those two components cost ~$550, of course you can get a cheaper graphics card for about ~150 and the cpu ~ $200, even that's $350 not including tax, leaving $50-$250 (according to your budget) for the other parts.

My new rig is so bawss compared to my craptastic laptop xD That said, I'm still having some issues I would like to be rid of when it is convenient to do so.
I'm typing this up from school, so my specs will be as I recall them to be. What is your current budget?: Since we're looking at roughly double my Christmas "allowance", $200 is conservative, while $400 might be possible. What part are you looking for? Why do you need it?: I'm not looking to actually get all of these, but I would like to get the most out of my money. Make the graphics card a priority though. -- Better graphics card than NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS. There is an apparent issue with the 6xxx/7xxx GeForce series that causes some graphics to render improperly or not at all. I've come across only two instances where I've noticed this, and both had pretty devastating consequences to my performance as a gamer. Otherwise, even in spite of those things, I'd like to think it's my card that's the bottleneck in my system, although it is hard to say. EDIT: Looking at this one so far... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814127510 $170, $160 after rebate. -- Better keyboard. I had no idea what terrors a budget keyboard could hold until I got my new rig. Ugh. Even the school and office keyboards do much better than this POS, and they don't have some power button that can be accidentally pressed to shut down my computer. I'm not looking for anything fancy, but I would like to have something that's functional, such as being able to press keys when I want to, when I need to, and not having keys that stay pressed when I let go of them. Fking POS. -- Better mouse. Currently have a budget mouse, which actually works fine, unless you are annoyed by squeaky wheels. My brother has a gaming mouse which he keeps preaching about, so mind as well throw a gaming mouse on the table as an option. -- Different speakers. I don't know if it's just me or the music I've been listening to (I don't actively gather music and have an iPod's worth to listen to), but I could swear some of the bass is being played through the speakers as well as the subwoofer. I would like to know how to test this out comprehensively without getting trial music production software, although knowing alternatives in hardware wouldn't be a bad thing. What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. If you have a pre-built, include the make and model. later... I have an AMD setup though. EDIT: Oh yeah I am using an HDMI input/output cable. Be thinking about that. How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter? I have used my desktop computer for games, 3D rendering, and making movies out of both. Currently, it gets choppy for L4D2, runs laggy as hell in Magicka (which I don't play anymore), runs roughly 10-25 fps in Dungeon Defenders fresh from a reboot. For League of Legends, it runs at 60 fps under most circumstances, 20-30 fps in big team fights, and ... 5 fps for really stupid things like Karthus' ult on 5 guys. When recording with Fraps, the best it can do is 30 fps. It's quite likely that's the fault of the hard drive though, as it records uncompressed video on a 16xx by 1080 resolution. I have also done an extensive amount of engineering work on it, such as having 3 MS Words and Excels docs, 4 Adobe Reader docs, Paint.NET, PGSuper, Mozilla FF, LoL streams, and calculator open all at once. Lulz.

Sorry about being really late on this. Turns out the graphics card I brought up doesn't work, because I only have one 2x3 pin from my power supply. That's going to be a pain. The one XTOTHEL might not work as well because... I dunno how many of the other connectors there are when I opened up my case to check. I'll have to open it up again and update later, although I believe there are two extra 1x4 pins. But since there are power cables that come with XTOTHEL's graphics card, is it possible to just buy those in addition to the graphics card of my choice? What details would I have to be wary of? EDIT: No go, only one spare 4 pin connector. Need to restart the search from scratch. How's this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...t04Descrip $145, $125 after rebate. And this is apparently what happens when you double the memory size but sacrifice a little bit of clocking speed: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6814130652 $170, $160 after rebate. Desktop specs: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS (to be replaced, duh) Asus ATX MOBO (too lazy to get the model number) AMD Athlon™ II X4 640 Processor 500W Pixxo PL-500RPF 4 GB RAM

What is your current budget?:
I'd say probably <$70? I do sorta just want a price check on the general market. What part are you looking for? Why do you need it?: Keyboard, for fighting games (and some other games that might need multiple inputs) What parts are in your current computer? Be as specific as possible. Links to Newegg/Tigerdirect are best. Stock keyboard that came with a HP computer. How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter? Fighting game inputs (ie. multiple inputs either in quick succession like half-circle directionals or together like...well I can't think of a general example without using a specific tech from the game I play) If you live anywhere other than the United States, please indicate your country. Canada Other notes: I'm essentially looking for a keyboard that lets me press several buttons together without being ghosted. I have no idea if that's the same as mechanical keyboards or not. I'm like 95% sure my keyboard atm is ghosted with probably 3KRO or something. I mean, stock keyboards can't possibly that fancy right.
