What Do You Guys Work As?

Engineers in a production company are hired based off their program efficiency in CAD based programs, and not so much their understanding of all things engineering, from what I've seen, at least.

I'm a lawyer.

As for myself, I really don't have any real qualifications from studying, basically picked up an easy (one year) course to study after high school and kill some time because I really had no direction.

I just work and don't plan on ever studying. I work for a state goverment department that caters to the community (provides assistance to families, health, housing, women, indigenous people and whatnot). I'm on the human resources side of things. I basically work with the award, entitlements and wages. My job includes the management of peoples wages and ensuring everything is correct, avoiding over/underpamyments and somewhat helping out with budgets. Very challenging and was not really the place I was hoping to settle in but whatever its decent and secure.

When I'm FINALLY able to go back to school I plan to major in Social Working and minor in Philosophy. Hopefully getting a job as a high school social worker after getting all the degrees needed. The social workers that I had in middle and high school helped me a pomegranate ton, and I dont know where I'd be without them. I want to help other kids the same way that they helped myself.

FrozenNight. What the pineapple are you going to do in fashion. Obviously you're smart and have a medicine major and could easily get a good stable well paid job. When I hear fashion and journalism I think of-no. I know that it's a bullpomegranate field, that it's unstable, and has nothing to do with intelligence.

Fashion??? Are you serious??? I could pineappleing go to JC Penny and paint a butterfly on a shirt and randomly luckily make more money in a fashion career then something your years of school could do. What the pineapple.

Explanation: Fashion is my passion, and my philosophy in life is that you live your passions. It took me two years of experiences during the first half of my college career to figure this out, when, yes, I started my freshman year thinking I wanted to be an infectious disease researcher. But as I really learned who I was I realized I could never work 80 hour weeks in some underground BSL-4 lab with pathogens that could kill me in a week if my glove ripped open. I'm exceedingly social and love ideas, so becoming a writer is exactly what I want to do. Fashion Journalism is more of a day job type thing, because, while it really is what I want to do since I just love fashion (it's a love I can't describe beyond saying it's what one feels when they KNOW they've found what they want to spend the rest of their life doing), experiencing and observing human culture and contributing to it through my writing is what I want to leave for this world.

So my science background? As I excitedly tell those who ask, the major is really just for fun now. I have a knack and a love for pathogenic organisms, for whatever reason, that, while it doesn't rival that of fashion, is something I just love to study and read about.

Also, fashion has everything to do with intelligence. It's not a field anyone could walk into and be brilliant at. As a related side comment, I categorize intelligence in two ways: technical intelligence ("book smart," if you will; "left brain"), and cultural intelligence ("street smarts;" "right brain"). I've taken mind tests before and have been told I'm dead center, meaning I use both hemispheres of my mind all the time - which makes sense with my majors. The point of me saying all of this is that the fashion world is incredibly right-brained, a section of the brilliant, cultural-intelligence "street smart" world also dominated by other artists and creative types.

tl;dr is that I wouldn't bash any profession; understand that there's a different type of intelligence required to be successful in different careers.

I have a stupid question. How come your Major is the Medical one first and then the Journalism if you want to be a journalist? Do you ever want to work in the Medical field?

Technically I'm double majoring, so I don't see one as first and the other second, just both as equal halves of my academic life. With regards to working in the medical field, I could see myself doing Health & Science Journalism if need be.

Ultimately, for those curious, I suppose that's what I'll eventually be able to do: freelance journalism or whatnot for anything from fashion to disease. It goes to show, then, that the epitome of my aforementioned "current life goal" is to get a "double M.A.," if possible, because there are two M.A. options at Columbia that I'd love: Arts & Culture and Health & Science journalism.

I'm going to assume that the medical is a backup plan in case the journalism thing doesn't work out. Considering that Microbology is an up and coming field, and there's going to be a LOT of jobs for it in the near future it's a good idea.

Again yes and no. I mean, I know I DON'T want to be a researcher or a doctor working in labs. I hate labs. Well not hate. Just would want to visit, not work full time in. Honestly, I could see myself working in Microbiological Journalism, and like you said, it is a big up-and-coming field; I've had science professors telling me from my first week of freshman year that the world needs more science journalists with a science background.

In the end I didn't plan my undergraduate academic career with careers in mind. I chose what I'm doing because that's what I'm interested in, and things have fallen into place beautifully.

I know a lot of poor people who are pretty damn miserable. I also know a lot of rich people who are pretty happy. I hope Dan likes slaving away for ages at the bottom as a lackey just for a glimpse of the spotlight in the shallow, judgmental fashion industry. But if he has fun, I guess.

I can see where the stigma of self absorbed snobs in the fashion industry comes from but I really think it's just the competitiveness within the industry. I really don't think it's any different from any other industry, there is bound to be competition in any industry.

I currently work at a Pizzeria (local, not franchised)
I do EVERYTHING but delivery and make the pizza (I can make pizza, but not so good LOL)
that includes cashier/phone/stock/cook/prepare everything


I'm in school for Visual Merchandising Arts (the science of selling essentially). Basically my it's job to make things pretty and glorify them to make them more likely to sell! (Store fronts/Store displays) My course is very tailored for soft goods (clothes predominantly)

In a nutshell my program is
-Visual Literacy (learning how to entice customers with visuals/graphic design/colour coordination)
-Visual Merchandising Workshop (workshop to build window displays)
-Freehand Drawing (to help illustrate ideas)
-Computer Techniques (using design programs to further illustrate ideas and work on designs)
-Visual Merchandising (theory and history behind Visual Merchandising)
-Fashion and Styling (1 bajillion powerpoints of reviewing outfits of celebrities and learning what goes with what, essentially to know how to dress a mannequin)
-Drafting (store design plans)

That's basically what I'm doing now, BUT I REALLY really want to get into Animation (I took a 1 year ART fundamentals course).

I failed to get in last year ;_;, but I'm hoping I'm able to get in this time, if not I'll continue my studies in Visual Merchandising Arts. In a way VMA is my safety net, and Animation is what I really want to do.

We'll see!

Life isn't about marriage, kids, blah blah blah. It's about doing what makes you happy. Obviously fashion makes him happy and more power to him for following his heart into something that really makes him happy.

I know a lot of people who are in fashion and journalism and have amazing jobs and aren't "toll booth operators"

You have such a narrow view. Life IS about doing what you love. You end up being totally miserable by the time you're old because you look back and realize you haven't done anything that actually fulfilled you. You can have a huge house, smexy cars, the hottest wife and you can still be miserable with it.

Life isn't about money. You just have to go wherever you want to go. If you feel like having a standard regular life, be my guest, but there's plenty of space and room to develop your ideas and places to go to refresh.

I pity you. I really do. I just hope that by the time you have to go face real life at its fullest you don't end up hurt. Like deeply hurt. Society isn't as naive as you are man, there's real people wanting to pick your pocket and step on your head by whatever means they can manage.

On-topic: I'm studying Law at my local Uni, going for a JD, but not quite sure I'll finish it. I'm pretty sure next year I'll be studying English or something in the IT field. I work at a local IT company testing software for a corporation in Belgium with clients all across Europe and that stuff.

I work at Sears lol. I just started a few weeks ago but I'm pretty much owning all of my coworkers, few of which are in their late 20's while I'm still 18. I pretty much run the electronics department, sell more TVs than everyone, sign morons up for Sears credit, and then steal more of their money by signing them up for protection agreements on our various electronics.

It's working out for now, but they won't give me full-time hours. It is also a commission-based job so I never really know how much I'm going to be making, unless it's November or December where I am pretty much garaunteed to sell TVs. So I may need to look into a secondary job or maybe just a new job altogether.
