Fascinating space

Not a current event, not deserving of Shenanigan's bullpomegranate, I guess it belongs here. I find this amazingly beautiful. :o

What really baffles my mind is the thought that if I pause this video at any given moment, the picture I will be looking at will last humanity's entire history many times over. The Solar System among many many many other will be thrown off into space like... helpless specks of dust, yet our lives will be far too short to even feel the throw.

I'll be honest with you, I am very interested in space and science. But watching a soundless video isn't fun.

Usually the best thing like this I can do is watch Science channel and actually watcha program that talks and explains things so I learn at the same time.

That is just a picture, I know you like it but I don't see how you can be fascinated with it without any words, it just seems boring to me. I do recommend the science channel though.

Dude, just look at it. Each of those dots are thousands of stars, flying around in perfect unison, some get sucked to the cores of the galaxies, some get thrown off to the tails yet still bound to the core, sweeping across space like a boss. Our sun is simply one of the thousands of stars in ONE of those tiny tweeny little dots. Even if we were among the billions of unlucky star systems that get thrown off into intergalactic space, what would happen to us? Well, nothing! Since all we do is revolve around OUR sun.
When I think about it, this kind of event, "galactic collision", sounds like an end-of-the-world kind of event, but even if we were caught RIGHT in the middle of it, in both space and time, we will not have the capacity to even appreciate the slightest change going on. If humankind were to be born and develop in the midst of that, it would be like us pausing the video to build a spaceship and get the entire population out of there, all in ONE second. It is JUST that grand.

This video makes me feel that I am just far too insignificant a something on a scale like this, yet I'm sitting here watching it unfold, thinking about its way of working and commenting about it. This just doesn't feel right. To have a glimpse of my state of confusion, try to explain to me just how long 4 billion years is.

People say things like this make them feel insignificant, but they just remind me of how important I can be in my life.

I know kalovale it's very impressive and when you step back and look at it we are all insignificant in the grand scheme, but I just get more enjoyment learning than seeing a wordless video even if I know what's going on.

Just my two cents, scientists have found things from as minor as an apple falling off a tree or beans' varying skin colors to as whacko as the existence or lack thereof of motion fascinating enough to devote parts or all of their life into studying them.
Now, I love Discovery channel as much as the next guy, but there has to be something that you'd simply look at and utter in awe "this is just mind-blowingly beautiful/wonderful" without it being spoken for, is there not?

I'm quite narrow-minded so I can't quite wrap my head around this simulation being boring. A video can be boring, sure; what's being shown here is, at least to me, the possible outcome of the future far far far far ahead of any point in time that my mind can conceptualize, though. Humankind has taken ONE second of that video to grow to being capable of simulating the rest, where will we be if given another second?

We've figured out what galaxy we're in, and the surrounding galaxies, galaxies that aren't surrounding us at all. Even if humanity developed in the midst of the collision, like he said, we could determine by the size and shape of our current galaxy what is going on. We would know that our galaxy was in the midst of a collision.

Oh, I see. From a simplistic perspective, you have a fair point. If we didn't know any better, we could probably just ignore the event completely. It's a good thing that we do know better, though. It would suck to be ignorant of such a massively epic event.

Which is the amazing part of this video: science. We're sitting here, watching something that we would most abso-fucking-lutely be ignorant of had it not been for science. In ONE second of that video, humankind has gone far enough to manage such a feat, where will we be after the next? Too bad I won't be there to see it.
