Welcome to AcornStory, our ongoing feature helping players get started in Maple World everything from choosing a class to finding friends to understanding combat to tips for participating in an online community. MapleStory is easy to learn, but once you learn the basic game mechanics, where do you go and what do you do? Read on to find out!

The Chaos update has brought many changes to Maple World, the most significant of which is the introduction of PvP gameplay. In previous editions of AcornStory, we introduced you to regular PvP and Ice Knight mode. In this edition, well go into detail about a PvP game mode exclusive to Global MapleStory Capture the Flag.

What is Capture the Flag?

Capture the Flags basic premise is obvious from its name. Two teams (Red and Blue) of up to six Maplers each appear on a multi-level battlefield. There is a flag at each end of the field. When the game begins, each team must try to steal the other teams flag and return it to their own base while retaining control of their own flag. When this condition is met, that team gets one point. The game lasts for twenty minutes or until one team gets three points.

Getting Started

To begin a PvP session, your character must be level 30 or above. Then, do the following:

Speak with Maximus, located in any major town, to be teleported to Battle Square.
Once in Battle Square, speak with NPC Crawson. This will bring up the Battle Mode window. This window allows you to select what type of PvP game you wish to play and what tier you wish to play in. Select Capture the Flag to start a Capture the Flag match.
Click the START button. The game will search for opponents and then bring you into a Capture the Flag match.

Playing Capture the Flag

A Capture the Flag match can be played with between six and twelve participants. The system will not begin a match with less than six players. Each end of the Capture the Flag battlefield has platform has a flag on it with the teams color. This is referred to as that teams Base. There are also areas above and below the base which are referred to as the Revive area. Players who are killed during a Capture the Flag match will reappear in one of these areas in five seconds.

The object of the game is to capture the other teams flag and bring it back to your base without allowing your flag to be captured. Your team receives one point each time you successfully do this. The first team to score three points is declared the winner. If neither team has scored three points after twenty minutes, the team with the highest point total is declared the winner.

The Flag

In order to pick up a flag, press the Pick-up key (default: Z) while standing over the flag. The flag will appear over the head of the character that is carrying it. A character will only drop a flag if they are killed. Should the flag carrier be killed, the flag will be dropped where the character died and can be picked up by the first character to reach it with 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, the flag will automatically return to its home base.
While it is in your base, your own flag can only be picked up by members of the enemy team. Should your flag be dropped on the battlefield, you may pick up your flag to return it to your base. A point cannot be scored until your own flag has been returned to your base.

Capture the Flag Gameplay

There are a number of differences between a Capture the Flag match and standard MapleStory gameplay.

There is no lasting negative to being killed in PvP. Within five seconds you will be revived in one of the Revive areas to continue the battle.

Consumable items such as potions and foods cannot be used.

PvP Rewards

Battle Experience

As in other PvP modes, everyone will receive Battle Experience points at the end of a Capture the Flag match. The match winners will receive a higher amount of points. Like regular experience, Battle Experience accumulates and periodically contributes to a rise in your Battle Rank. Battle Rank offers a variety of benefits and is completely separate from your characters level.

Battle Points

Battle Points can be exchanged for Gallant Emblems through the BP Exchanger in Battle Square. You can use Gallant Emblems to purchase exclusive items from Larson, another NPC in Battle Square.

These items include a variety of accessories as well as a Mystery Scroll that turns into a random scroll when you use it and a Mystery Recipe that turns into a random crafting recipe when you use it. Gallant Emblems are also used as ingredients for some crafting recipes. There are also three special Honorable 7-day medals that are awarded for various actions on the battlefield.

I still don't understand why they don't put these out along with the update that brings the content. Also I think they forgot to mention LOL WE BORKED PvP.

I agree, they should've had this written up to go along with it's release.

They invest way too much time in CTF considering they broke PVP with it. Too bad they couldn't figure out a way to separate damage multipliers from each mode...

This and the fact that they basically over hyped what turned out to be not as amazing as they made it out to be. I mean yay exclusive PvP mode, but it really isn't something a lot of people were thinking of.

I have not played this mode yet because, frankly, it looks and plays terribly. Add to that the fact that the game modes are biased towards classes that can have extreme mobility, none of my characters can do that except for my chief bandit.

They should've made the flag disable all skills for the carrier.(Ala Fat Princess) That way it would play more strategic and we wouldn't have "flash jump/tele" problems.

Example for those who don't know what I'm talking about:
