Feb-June 06: Vac hacks, "no monsters in my map" (due to upper areas of maps where legits couldn't go to), most servers' top players hackers
Nov 07-Spring 08 (? approx): PG hacks, "all channels of all high hp monsters in use by hackers", rankings approximately double in number of characters
Spring 08: Shop, dupe, fame hacks... economy gets pineappleed several times.

oh yes, i remember these times when hacking was so easy and the gms didnt even work. it wasnt as annoying as the PG hack, tho. the pg hacks lagged the pomegranate out of all the servers, and caused me to die like every 5 mins.

IsaacGS Wrote:Are you sure? I'm thinking it was 2006, because the time that they renamed themselves and the time that they flew the servers out to California seem to me to have been the same time, and I wouldn't remember it if it had happened in 2005.

Earliest patch listed on the ftp shows the january 2006 patch as 0.16.

A further search on the main website shows a note about the server issues that occurred with patch 0.11.

So I'm somewhat sure thats when it happened.
However, its not 100% conclusive as the patch times are not up for that particular update.

You also got the details of the second Halloween event detailed on the website(Maladys 2006 SE buckets)

The Ossyrian Riot was in April '05. I think it was April 27th or 16th... or somewhere around there.

Oh yeah and something I never forgot - January 31st, first person in GMS landed on Ossyria. Basically what woke people up to that "WHOAMG WE ARE GOING TO HAVE OSSYRIA"

I think March '08 was the first Tespia term.

I think April '08 was the second Tespia term.

June '08 third Tespia term.

I don't know if you want to mention it at all, but there were a few hacker waves throughout the years. While you mention things ABOUT hackers, I think we should mention how they really did affect the community and draw lots of negative criticism for Wizet/Nexon.

I'd say the worst hacker wave in the history of gMS was Fall-Winter of '06, beginning of '07. I clearly remember going through levels 50-90 between September and March and having TONS of issues with these hackers. In the Fall it got so bad that there would be 3 vac hackers per channel on popular maps like Grupins, forcing people training there to go to Pepes. A few weeks later Pepes became the 3-vac-hackers-a-channel place, and F/Ps had to resort to Pangs at an early level while other classes had to train at much worse places.

At the beginning of 2007 there were HUGE issues with hackers in Ludibrium. It was ridiculously hard to be a legit and find a non-hacked Grim map, much less a Dual Ghost Pirate or almost any other popular training map in the area. I'm sure lots of people also remember the fear of DCing or signing off on those maps (especially Magicians), because if you happened to be unlucky enough to sign on again on a map that was being vac hacked, you were more than likely to get owned by a flying monster. Not to mention at this time there were hackers who were fly hacking while vac hacking in order to try and hide from being reported. In short, utterly ridiculous amounts of hacking that made training for legits near unbearable.

Nexon's policies of zero-tolerance and autoban did have an effect, but a second, less devastating hacker wave did erupt in the summer of 2007 as well. I remember a sharp contrast between the beginning and end of the summer, where at the beginning you could find Shark, Grim, or Hime maps with ease (well, maybe not Hime maps ;D), but by the end of the summer hackers started overrunning those so much that people were forced back to Grims, some even back to Gobies. I know this wave ended abruptly with a swift response from Nexon, but it was still widely noticed by the community.

*************************

In summary, I think it's important to put the two major gMS hacker waves on the timeline as they symbolize times of hardship for legits, as well as community unity and demand for a response from Nexon, which was achieved by the end of each wave.

June '08 : Last Tespia term.

Yeah, I doubt NEXON is going to open Tespia again, sadly.

Seeing how they didn't open it for the last patches, looks like they quitted the "project".. :X

The lulz! That was when I installed MapleStory for the first time.

How about when Q&As were first unveiled? And NxJoe, the first member of Nexon we talked to?

If you want to add something negative to the timeline you can mention when the servers weren't large enough to handle the number of users trying to access them.

Does anyone know the year dates of what Nexon received an "F" by the Better Business Bureau? One year they had a "F" and the next year, a "B". That's strange but that's also history that I think is worth mentioning.

Also, the exact months of when each the servers was released.

I believe that was "covered" here:

The history is hacking epidemic itself is to talk about if you wanna focus on one alone because there were several ways to vac.

I thought that Wizet became Nexon around when the biggest hacking epidemic (I always called it the plague) began, so sometime around October '06 (I remember seeing some of the hacks an not recognizing them back then).

I quit before NLC came out and I know that that certain hack came out well before I quit in May 2007.
