$100 just for the game? I don't even know what this is but no standalone game is worth that.

That's true, except that Japanese prices for everything seem to be ridiculous. Games, DVDs, and Blu Rays cost a lot of money of there. I happen to recall that the recent Super Robot Wars game cost $100 or so.
That aside, the price of the box set is even more ridiculous, considering that one would be paying an extra $150 for a magazine, a Blu Ray, and a soundtrack. There's no way in hell that these three items should cost that much, even considering how screwed up the prices are in Japan. Considering that these Blu ray releases usually contain 2 or 3 episodes, that deal is a total rip off.
I'd be willing to buy a copy of Idolm@ster 2 because it will never come to America and for so long, I've been bound by region restriction on the Xbox; but the thing is, I'd be paying $100 for something I can't fully understand. Meh, at least Idolm@ster SP is being translated by /jp/.

Welcome to Japan.
But yeah, the price is a bit too high for me. I'd be slightly more interested if someone could confirm that no Japanese knowledge is needed to actually play (or it's fine as long as you're using a guide), but I'm guessing that's not true.

The only game in the series you can really play without much knowledge of Japanese is Live4U, since it was more focused on the concerts, outfits, and rhythm games than it was on story and reading. It's only on the Xbox, though; so unless you happen to have an imported Xbox, it's a no go.
And if it's of any interest to anyone, there's a translation project for Idolm@ster SP for the PSP. Haruka and Makoto's routes are pretty much translated.

If you look into it further, it's actually only that much for the limited edition release.

Most websites probably won't price the standalone at $100, it'll probably land somewhere between 80-90, however thats still a hefty price to pay considering the language barrier. Though IIRC a patch translating Tales of Vesperia PS3 into English has been made, so theres always a chance in the future that somebody might be willing to translate this as well

Ah, I kinda want to hear Sarah's take on this: there's about $200 worth of DLC from the 360 version being included in the PS3 version.

Good. XBox owners suck. That's more reason for weirdos who want to play games as dancing girls to support the PS3. Any support is good support, I guess.

That actually makes the price not look as bad. If I remember right, the 360 version's retail price wasn't too much lower than the PS3 version when it first came out

Except that there's no reason to be charging $200 for any sort of DLC in the first place.
These people must think pretty highly of themselves to be putting such ridiculous prices on their creepy game.

Again, this isn't that odd of a price for Japan, especially because it's not like here in the US where every single game for a console is $50 or $60. The exchange rate between JPY and USD is really horrible right now too, so it looks even worse than it should be.

It's not odd for DLC to reach $200 in Japan? The highest DLC I've seen in NA is Disgaea 3's total package which is $39.99 (and still outrageous)

If you flip through some of the DLC in Japan's PSN, the prices are pretty high. Tales of Vesperia's costumes run like 400+ yen a pop

What exactly would cause someone to buy it for the PS3 and not the PC? (if that is the correct format it was first on) Does this version have like a ton of extra features or some such?

I think the original platform for the series was the 360. Apparently the PS3 version their releasing now has all the DLC content of the 360 version already on the disc, and a few other extra things that weren't originally in the 360 version

Oh, I was talking about the game itself. And you're misreading what I posted- it's not one big DLC package but a ton of different items.

Ah, I assumed it was released on the PC first. I guess if you really wanted it would make sense to buy it now given the whole "extra 200 dollars worth of DLC" it comes with.
