So, I haven't had my laptop for a while therefore haven't been on TF2 in AGES. I heard that ever since it became F2P it's gone waaayyy downhill. Is this true? Should I even bother re downloading it?

It's still fun, but a lot of idiots play Payload everything like it's Team Deathmatch.

From what I've seen the game has very little of the "team" part, almost no one communicates unless they know each other beforehand (mostly the people with same suffixes, probably from some group). This is the french/europe community, I can't say how it was before because I also started when it became free.
Maybe Valve should do tiers like what Starcraft does?

If you have/had regular servers you played on then you'll probably be okay. But the quality of games has dipped a bit lately. As mentioned everyone basically runs around killing each other instead of the objective. Any KOTH match I have tried has just been awful. But it should get better with time.

Nothing new there really.

Anyway, I'm a new player but I do understand that getting the objective is more important than going around killing, I often change classes for the best of the team (even if it's not my most preferred class) and rage on voice chat when there are 6 snipers on the team.

You just have to find a community to be part of. I've hid myself in two communities, and I rarely have problems. If hats bother you, use Irish Fortress (removes hats from appearing). It's always been that way, though. The tf2 community has almost always been bad almost completely through. Just have to find a place you like that is fairly idiot free.
I figure this would also be a good time to propose to get a server setup. I could probably learn sourcemod somewhat, so I could manage it, and I know what's good and what isn't when it comes to customs.

If it does better than your minecraft server that crashed every 5 mins.

There is still teamwork, you just have to communicate.

You do realize minecraft servers are probably the worst servers ever programmed. They require a really good, dedicated rig to run it. In the end, it all comes down to money. I already host a handful of servers, so there's no more room for anything else. Someone else is going to have to pay for one.

Eh. I found a good, competitive, 24 v 24 server that I often frequent. While there are noobs there, the majority of people just focus on the goal (which is....control points, actually).
No one ever does the Capture the Flag Objective unless it's on Turbine, ha ha.

Besides from TC, generally vanilla CTF gamemode is the worst in tf2. The only good CTFs are a/d CTF, and a new emerging type of CTF play that someone in the community has coined recently.

I have a problem finding my place between servers full of noobs and ones where I can barely play since everyone else plays so well.
Worst is that most of the time teams are very unbalanced with all the good players shifting to one team with every map, no fun when all the inexperienced ones are bunched together against a whole team that communicates and plays well.
I do have some preferences already: CTF maps are total chaos, servers with instant respawn are no good and more than 12v12 becomes a mess.

I think you meant, more than 12 vs 12 .
Yeah. 12 vs 12 Control Points are usually the best maps.

Some players do focus on their kill:death ratio - I always find it ridiculous how the scout(s) on my team isn't making a run to the payload to reset that timer/make it stop moving backward. Yes, it's a suicide most of the time, but the whole goal is to move it. *sigh*
EDIT: And how it seems no one knows how to crouch except me.
