I'd like to buy/own one. The reason is that last night, as I was running Maplestory while playing a video on my bed, my laptop just suddenly and immediately turned off. It acted as though I didn't have the power plugged and I pulled out the battery.
I figured that the laptop had overheated. The fan was blowing at triple-speed, like it usually does when I usually play maple. This makes me think that a cooling fan, which I don't have, won't be too useful for cooling down my laptop, especially not in the summer when it's 90 degrees. My house doesn't have AC and my windows are all single layered, so it heats up considerably during the day, especially since it's really dry where I live.
I've considered putting my laptop in the refrigerator, but I don't want water droplets to start forming on the inside of my laptop.
tl;dr: I want some kind of refrigeration device that can plug into AC wall sockets, doesn't take too much power to run, and can act like an electrical ice pack for my laptop.
Can anyone recommend something good but not too expensive? What are the specs, shapes, brands that I should to look for? How long do these last? What is the normal price range of these devices? I'm not really looking for a portable one, since I usually don't play Maple or watch videos when I go out, and really, those are the only two things that can burn out my laptop. (That and huge pdf files, which I also don't really use when I'm out.)
For those who don't know what I'm talking about:

I'm thinking about maybe 50-100 price range. The particular one in my link is too expensive, but I may buy it if it's the only option. Unfortunately, I haven't found any place to buy these devices from. Google shopping churns out no results. I don't understand why these are so hard to find. They look great for cooling.

Also, since I don't want to make a new thread, on the topic of refrigerated laptops, can anyone tell me about this?
http://totl.net/Eunuch/index.html
Why did it fail in the end?
Also, I found another article about a refrigerating laptop cooler, but no product in sight. :/

With a laptop cooler you should be more worried about airflow than specific temperature of a room. Yes, a standard one will do worse when you're using it in a 90 degree room, but that's not very hot compared to the 80-100 degrees celsius that your laptop is internally. There are plenty of decent coolers out there but I've never heard of someone needing a mini ac unit attached to their laptop, especially for something as weak as maplestory. You might want to look into a standard laptop cooling pad and a lapdesk or similar item so you aren't blocking the fans when you have it in bed.

I don't have a graphics card. My laptop basically overclocks whenever I require something that normally requires a graphics card. That's why it heats up so much.

Even a basic 20-30$ cooler will help out a good amount. Check Newegg for some decent deals and good service. You want an active one (has at least 2 fans) so that it will actually move cooler air towards the intake. You want multiple fans because components near the outside of the case still can get fairly hot and having cool air move over the entirety of the laptop is important. It's a good idea to be wary of how you set the laptop when you're using. Don't lay it on the bed, or couch, or thick carpet, and don't block the intake vents with your legs. Things like this will maybe minimize the problem a bit. If your laptop is getting hot enough to shut down, then doing this could also help with speed as well, as some systems will stutter when they're running at peak temperatures.

I always use this one as an example, but it doesn't need to be multi-fan if you can get one like this you know...

It's more than sufficient. =P
With only 1 fan too.

That one wouldn't do jack for my laptop. Its vents are off to the sides, right about where the fan doesn't cover. Other people's it'd do well on I bet. It all depends on where your vents are. Just look at the fan(s) and be sure they're in the general area of your vent, and if you're going for a single fan make sure it's not some 80mm tiny thing. In case it needs to be said, you still need to be sure you aren't blocking the input vents on your laptop cooler, otherwise it won't do much good, so I'm still recommending a lapdesk or hard surface to set it on.

You haven't tried it? Everyone I know who has used it, no matter where their vents are has seen improvement. Now no doubt, if you have for example a new Asus with a completely closed bottom then it gives you maybe 5 degrees celsius cooler temps but if you have a nice open bottom it'll do you for 10+ sometimes. The air travels further than just where the fan is. It is designed how it is for a reason. But if you say so when it's been proven to have effect regardless then I guess I'll just believe you that your laptop is "unique".
Though from reading reviews there are always going to be ignorant people, like those who delete their drivers on new laptops thinking it's "bloatware" and then wondering why nothing works. But they mean nothing.
You are right that it will have less of an effect, but it would still help a bit.

I'd rather have a refrigerator than a fan. In the blistering hot summer, would you prefer a fan to actual air conditioning? My laptop wouldn't.

Air temperature affects living things more than computers, mang.

I emailed the guy in the link of the first post. He said the units are not for sale because they're still under development.

Uhmmmm:
- External fans don't cool a laptop at all
- Laptops can only cool when their air-INTAKE isn't blocked by cloth like sheets in the bed
- How old is the laptop?
- Mini refrigerator might be a hassle in a bed, unless it's somehow locked to the laptop itself
I would advise:
- Try cleaning the laptop fan internally + apply new cooling paste (Arctic MX-4 preferred) - Don't start if you never done this before
- Try preventing air-INTAKE block by cloth
- Get a small airco, and let it blow towards you and your laptop

I'll go with Devil and recommend these actions, if any. A normal laptop should not overheat during normal usage (as in using normal programs on the computer without altering the settings and elements inside of the laptop), so either there's something going on in it, or it's a very old laptop. So either get it checked or get a new one.
