"American gaming communities are never good" implies that gaming communities in other countries are better. I assumed you meant Japanese ones. Where did you mean, pray tell?
ShanghaiDizzy Wrote:Well, balance issues matter very little in a game where there's no balance at all. Everything else, yeah. Not to mention most version exclusive stuff tends to get ignored, with the exception of JMS exclusive content (since Japanese people actually know how to make games).
I have to agree that JMS exclusive content is the most interesting, but it's also extremely poorly implemented.

Why the hell do I have to compare it to anything to say American gaming communities are crap?
This is a prime example right here. Just because I say something doesn't shine like gold, I'm obviously comparing it to something "better," right? >_>

Because the GMS community is an AMERICAN gaming community. >_>
And if I MUST compare, what's to say that I'm not comparing it to OTHER American communities? Seriously. Get over yourself.

I do agree with that, but I'm also gonna cut the Japanese some slack here since, it's hard to implement something good into a game that's already been in the low.

The mood of the community as a whole was indisputably different then. I miss that right now.

The only thing that really bothers me is the growing dependance on NX to do better in the game, it used to be Skill and Luck that got you through the game. Now anyone with a very disposable income can be the best.
What game are you playing? Maple NEVER required Skill back then, and STILL doesn't require skill.
Also "Potential System" killed Maple for me.

Teppi Wrote:the thing that makes old maple better was the release of 3rd job/ intro to ludi grim/viking/squid/goby pt. at the time it has such a good community in a sense that we were not damage wh0res since the concept of secondary low stat-statless is still not worth it since zakum was still OMGENDGAMEBOSS. as a result, people were playing mainly for fun and for the community. partying was extremely fun in a sense that u get to meet so many new people in a non-pimento way because nobody really cares about your damage because each person in a party has a platform to themselves to take care of and nobody really cared that much of the exp difference because of dmg. 1 of the only separation we had was levels, which, if you were 90+ you were looked upon equally. every class was pretty equal back then, even tho some were stronger than other. they all have an interesting place/pt to level that people will accept them. spending hours grinding back then was actually quite fun and interesting even tho it was slow(during that time u need to grind around 10 hours per level). but all the positives of the party system was really really enjoyable. vkpt, sqpt, gbpt was pure fun because u get ur own platform (not to mention vikings drop ilbis, which was OMG back then too), and 70+ equips dropping from them was worth something, and grim partying always get you on fire because kage, which was dropped from grim, was such a rare and expensive item back then, and getting a kage per 10 hour of grinding was totally worth the hours. every job fit everywhere, and the best part is, since they dont care much about the exp difference, the community talked a lot during training and yes that was fun . so the old maple is really the peak of maple that was worth spending hours on
and hacking back then, compared to now, is really a watever hacking. all ppl hacked was the vac, which was for the level, and then it was for nothing since the community really excludes you if they know you hacked so there was pretty much no fun for the hackers except to annoy others
in addition to that, in a sense, we're all equal in terms of equips and damage. passing 7 60% on a weapon was considered OMG, and passing 1 or a few 10% on a weapon was OMG Y U SO LUCKY!, and, of course, cash shop didn't play a role in separate us like it is now
Errr... what?
What game were you playing?

Well, for a start, massive generalizations never go down well. But hey, what better way to correct yourself than "Go f'uck yourself". You the man shikage
@topic. Ehh, I wish the potential system didn't exist, or cubes were a drop item rather than a cash shop item, but other than that, its pretty much the same as it ever was.

maple when 3rd job just released i'm pretty sure damage played a role but not that much and not as severed. remember this was before PAC, miracle scrolls, apples , 30%/70% scrolls, etc. etc. all we had was 10% and 60% scrolls, no zhelms/others. so ur pretty will be using the gears that is closest to ur level, and not many people had items with more than 2 10% scrolls applied in, most were having items with 6-7 60% scrolls applied, so i can safely say we were pretty equal. and i say nobody says much about exp because they each have a different place to be. the strongest classes with the most damage wh0res and exp-caring ppl were sins and dks back then. sins were pretty much stuck with vkpt as the fastest place for exp, and they do depends on others, but since we're pretty much the same in dmg, it was meh. and each class had a forte each platform in vkpt too. for dk they were pretty much grim pt. when aqua dungeon comes along goby party kinda makes them less dependable i guess but other classes still fit in. the population of those who really cares MUCH about exp gain/hour and damage wh0re is really small compare to now

The first time I tried the game I was only able to play for one week... the game experience was awful and I didn't even understand why it was awful. As I came back and learned it was because of hackers and the community in general being awful.
Made my first character, a mage. I couldn't go anywhere to train because there was one hacker in every channel killing everything. I had to go to to other maps where it wasn't so great just to get harrassed by others because "my damage was weak, my character was awful, etc". I got my 2nd job after grinding a lot just to get more awful comments "ewww a i/l mage" and that kind of stuff. I can't remember the exact date but I know it was 5 years ago.
When I came back 3 years ago there were less hackers (which made me stick to the game) but the community was still awful except for few people.

I recall being connected overnight on a regular basis (just before/after 3rd Job was introduced). Now I'm lucky if I can stay on for a few hours before disconnecting. I do think the community as a whole was more intelligent, but then that can be said of almost any community made up of early adopters. There were what, 200,000 accounts total perhaps in gMS around then compared to the <large number here> now?

My personal idea of this is that it is mostly nostalgia, however since BB and potential, that has changed significantly. In my eyes up to that point the game was still a "game" rather than the job it is now. I know that may sound odd, but hang on for a minute. These changes made leveling up and doing more damage (non-comparative) much easier than they were before, meaning less of a grind, right? While this is true, in the process of doing so they removed and altered the game content to such an extent that it was made "exclusively" to be beneficial to leveling. They disregarded other aspects of the game and threw them together in a shoddy patchwork to make it seem like the whole package was still there. In focusing on the levels and damage, they have ignored the story continuity, feelings of accomplishment, collection, and exploration aspects of the game.
To summarize my discontent; they've turned it into a glorified dress-up plus calculator. And the saddest part is that people accept and enjoy that. At least I'm glad to say ALL of my friends have now quit as well. Soon as I'm done with a couple more goals, I'll leave with content.
This is a personal opinion, and I won't be bothered to justify it. If you read my sig which I've had for years, you'd see that I've always held this opinion.

I guess it's worded wrong, I meant "know how" like where to train and what to do. Whereas the people who don't know what to do (where is the best place to train?) would level and advance slowly. Now anyone can buy their way to the top.
