I don't understand why people say Old maple was so much better
#1
The only thing I can understand is the buddys/guilds. But for the most part older maple was just as bad as today. Boring grind, hackers everywhere, inflation, horrid community. yet some people still claim how better it was how the community was so intelligent back then. But, how? Was it really better?

It's the same situation with TV and music. People think everything was better when they were younger rather than it is today.

I just brush it off and pay no attention to it anymore.

Nostalgia goggles.

It's the same with Pokémon too. And a lot of other things, but Pokémon is what really sticks out for me.

You make it seem like nothing of the past can be superior...

Innocence of Maple - simple as that.

To be fair for those who say Old Maple > New Maple, adding potential ruined a lot of what was considered "fun" about Maple.

The community still sucked back then.

American gaming communities are never good.

Like ShanghaiDizzy said, one of the biggest things that ruined MapleStory was the implementation of the Potential System, making everyone who could spend thousands of dollars on the game miles and miles ahead of those who couldn't.

It's the tendency of games getting worse as they get older, and that effect grows exponentially when it's a game that keeps getting updated.

The community was crap then, and it is crap now. The content is pretty cool, back then, there was little content.
The only thing that really bothers me is the growing dependance on NX to do better in the game, it used to be Skill and Luck that got you through the game. Now anyone with a very disposable income can be the best.

When I was your age, we used to walk through those awful L shaped maps to get from Kerning to Pig Beach and then through another 15 maps just to get to Ellinia just to repot because it was cheaper there.

lol naive idolism of the Japanese...Teenagers without responsibilities and adult children are the same everywhere.

On topic, MapleStory was better in the days when there was actually fresh content coming out every now and then instead of the endless upgrading spree it is today. Not by much, though.

Part of the "old maple > new maple" argument is that all the new players that weren't around when maple was hard to level in (before big bang, before dual-blades, before reorganization, before potential, before white scrolls, before chaos scrolls, before the MTS, before dark scrolls, before the plethora of godly items available in the FM...), take the new system for granted and act like it's always been this easy.

On top of that, getting above 100 before ludi and el nath were in place was a chore. I remember grinding my bishop to 8x in the Kerning City Subway area 4 on wraiths because Coolies was always full. It was because of that grind fest that I made my original leveling calculator.

I remember before Orbis actually had content, when you'd fly to the island in the sky, risking death if you were noob an unaware, and getting there and not having anything to do except talk to NPCs and go down a giant 20-story well that led you nowhere... Then I remember when Ludi came out, and it was that same crap, except instead of being a 20-story well, it was a 100-story well, and everyone said the PQ was at the bottom, so we'd race our friends down down down and when we got to the bottom, we'd realize there was nothing down there and we'd have no return scrolls and we'd let out a YELP and suicide.

New content has always made maplestory a replayable game. Whether it's new maps, characters, item systems, or just experiences with new people, the game has always been this way, now there's just more crap to complain about.

I don't understand the desire for "exclusive" content. Version exclusive content almost always completely conflicts with the design goals of the Korean developers. It causes balance issues, it causes glitches when they try to tie it into new content, and it's generally detrimental to the game. Yes, it does give you something extra to do, but I'd rather just see more content pumped out by KMS. I think sometimes people forget that KMS is its own game with its own share of players that "only get updates from KMS."

Did I say Japanese communities are better? No. Go shove your unneeded comment elsewhere.

the thing that makes old maple better was the release of 3rd job/ intro to ludi grim/viking/squid/goby pt. at the time it has such a good community in a sense that we were not damage wh0res since the concept of secondary low stat-statless is still not worth it since zakum was still OMGENDGAMEBOSS. as a result, people were playing mainly for fun and for the community. partying was extremely fun in a sense that u get to meet so many new people in a non-pimento way because nobody really cares about your damage because each person in a party has a platform to themselves to take care of and nobody really cared that much of the exp difference because of dmg. 1 of the only separation we had was levels, which, if you were 90+ you were looked upon equally. every class was pretty equal back then, even tho some were stronger than other. they all have an interesting place/pt to level that people will accept them. spending hours grinding back then was actually quite fun and interesting even tho it was slow(during that time u need to grind around 10 hours per level). but all the positives of the party system was really really enjoyable. vkpt, sqpt, gbpt was pure fun because u get ur own platform (not to mention vikings drop ilbis, which was OMG back then too), and 70+ equips dropping from them was worth something, and grim partying always get you on fire because kage, which was dropped from grim, was such a rare and expensive item back then, and getting a kage per 10 hour of grinding was totally worth the hours. every job fit everywhere, and the best part is, since they dont care much about the exp difference, the community talked a lot during training and yes that was fun . so the old maple is really the peak of maple that was worth spending hours on
and hacking back then, compared to now, is really a watever hacking. all ppl hacked was the vac, which was for the level, and then it was for nothing since the community really excludes you if they know you hacked so there was pretty much no fun for the hackers except to annoy others
in addition to that, in a sense, we're all equal in terms of equips and damage. passing 7 60% on a weapon was considered OMG, and passing 1 or a few 10% on a weapon was OMG Y U SO LUCKY!, and, of course, cash shop didn't play a role in separate us like it is now

Well, balance issues matter very little in a game where there's no balance at all. Everything else, yeah. Not to mention most version exclusive stuff tends to get ignored, with the exception of JMS exclusive content (since Japanese people actually know how to make games).
