Yeah, there's a lot of fat people in the US, I'm not used to seeing them.

I'm not either. In fact, I really DON'T see them that much. I'd like a breakdown by city, because I live right around and in that orange area.

I think alot of it has to do with the fact wages are down and people can't afford the healthy food. Our income is pretty good in my house but not good enough to buy the healthier foods I would like to at a health food store. It's a lose/lose situation alot of the times. People also don't understand how to read nutrition labels and can get easily confused about things that are in their foods.

I'm happy that I don't put on weight when I eat a bit more. On the other side, I'm a bit concerned about obesity over here, it grew from 4% in 1981 to 10% in 2004 (in males). But appearently it's more on the rise in kids right now, which in my eyes, is much worse than in adults.

That's what happens when you can eat a mcdonalds hamburger for a dollar but all the healthy crap in supermarkets is like $5 for some organic vegetables.

Getting fat is one of the reasons I fear living in America next year. Damn larger-than-life portion sizes.

Stop stereotyping. You're only going to get fat if you choose to allow it to happen, unless you have some sort of genetic predisposition. It's obvious you don't.

Funny thing is, it probably costs the same or is cheaper to manufacture juice (fruit + water + a little sugar) than soda (artificial flavorings + carbonated water + sweeteners) but the end price is the opposite.

A 2 liter bottle of Pepsi is $2.50 and a 1 liter bottle of Orange/Apple/Grape juice is $4.99 where I live.
Is it because juices expire whereas soda lives forever?

I think one partial reason why health food is more expensive is because it's a "craze" thing. Usually, when something is a "fad" the prices are astronomical. I know it doesn't SEEM like health food is a "fad" with this data, but every where I look there's something about LOOSE WEIGHT FAST.

Also, I heard some children in the upcoming generation are able to metabolize transfats or whatever.

Juice is more fattening than diet soda, even if it is more "healthy".
Drink water.

With McDonald's and similar, the problem is not the (double) cheeseburgers. It's the fries. Replace them with a salad (and try not to drown it in oily dressing). And the milkshakes.
At home, the problem isn't non-organic veggies or even instant ramen, it's chips and cookies and pretty much anything that is composed of starch, fat, and salt and/or sugar. Cut that junk out and even if you're too poor for "health food" you'll see a big improvement.

I worked at a movie theater for 2 years and I saw them. Oh goodness I saw them. I did all the jobs in the theater but concession really was the worst. You'd have two very obese adults and two fat children. The kids would each get a tub of popcorn with butter (always butter, so much butter, the butter is nasty, why the pineapple do you want more butter?!) and candy, and a large soda. Then the parents, gah.

"Ok, and what can I get for you guys? *smile*"
"Hi *glare*, we'd like a large popcorn....is it really $9?!"
"Yes, it's definitely the better deal if you're interested in popcorn though, and it's refillable (like you don't know how much it costs, and come on, like you need a refill). *shows sizes, smile*"
"Wow, it keeps getting more expensive, this is ridiculous. Ok, a large popcorn."
"Would you like butter on that?"
"Yes, make sure you get some in the middle, and extra butter, add lots of butter *greedy eyes* [totally not kidding here]."
"Sure thing, i'll layer that for you, anything else?"
"Yeah, nachos."
"Alrighty, and can I get something for you to drink?"
"Uh....................................................i'll take a medium diet coke, there're so many calories in the normal coke and i'm trying to watch my weight."

Great, and that medium is refillable. Would you like to try a pizza? [obligatory]"
"No, don't you see how much i'm already spending?"

I don't understand it. I don't think i'll ever understand it. Stereotyping? Yes. Based on 2 years of actual experience? Yes.

There's also all the people who try to crash into a "magical" diet, then a week later can't take it and binge on junk food. There is no "magical fix". I think Cracked pointed it out that losing weight is like swimming through a piranha infested moat for a few years, letting them eat off chunks of your flesh. Most people don't have the guts to go through with it.

"Healthy food" necessarily isn't healthier food, either. It's sort of a mess how that stuff is advertised to hell and back.
