http://kotaku.com/5812512/multiple-wii-u...cost-issue
Quote:The Wii U comes with one Wii U Controller. Each console will support only one of these controllers; Kotaku broke the news that Nintendo is looking into games that support two Wii U controllers. But why is Nintendo planning to release the console with single Wii U Controller support?
"There's a cost issue," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Japanese business site Diamond Online. According to Iwata, Nintendo aims to have the console and games support one Wii U Controller.
"Technically, it is possible for the Wii U to support multiple Wii U Controllers," Iwata said. However, this will result in a "considerable" price increase.
According to Iwata, "We're not planning on asking our customers to buy multiple Wii U Controllers."
Multiple Wii U Controller support makes more sense to me than, say, Wii Balance Board support.
This isn't the first thing Nintendo has nixed from the Wii U due to pricetag hikes; the Wii U will not have Blu-ray or DVD movie playback due to patent costs. Not sure if Nintendo's smart or simply stingy.
How to play multiplayer games...

I honestly don't like that controller. I think they should make a screen on the controller an attachment instead. Just very inconvenient to have to be careful with a huge screen controller like that.

Not playing Blu-Ray or DVD movies is a pretty big deal. I know it's not meant to be an entertainment system like the PS3 or XBOX but that one feature opens up a huge market -- especially with Nintendo targeting families.

haha, oh wow. Not even 2012 yet and the console is already starting to become a disappointment.

The machine is capable of doing it though, it just depends on hackers to open that up. I said it in the other thread but I'll say it here too. I wonder what price point they're looking at, because geting patents for DVD and Blu-Ray shouldn't be more than 50 dollars I would assume.

The wii can't play DVDs normally, but after homebrew you can EASILY (VERY EASILY) make it capable of that.
No blueray isn't a disappointment to me because buying blue ray discs is retarded. (to me)

Guess I was. More so now though. Only thing I was disappointed with before was no Gamecube controller support.

Average joe family man doesn't want to hack their console, though. If the ability isn't innate then it's going to be a big turn off for potential buyers.

Average joe family man can buy a DVD player for probably less than $50 anyway. O_o A game console that is only good for...playing games isn't much of a turn off.

Really, to be honest the most depressing thing about this is the lack of multiple remotes, not the DVD/Blueray. If you're buying a console the main thing you want it for is to play god damn games with it. With your family or friends. If you can only have one remote you can't do that.

The thing is takebacker, you're talking from a personal perspective without looking from the corporation's point of view or the average joe.
Anyways, the other thing about the controller is it looks like it has the potential to be awkward and/or heavy. Compared to nintendo's usual designs, this is a huge difference.

Yeah, because buying multiple controllers has NEVER been a "considerable" price increase. In fact, buying more controllers actually DECREASES the overall price!
I don't understand the logic behind this lol

I said Blu-Ray and DVD (both should be available). Blu-Ray players are still ridiculously expensive and if you're going to buy a new ridiculously expensive gaming console you're looking to get the one that's going to be of the most use to you and your family.
My friend has a 6 year old son and she was looking to buy him a gaming console but she wanted one that is worth the money so I broke down for her what each of the current ones is capable and she ended up buying a PS3 solely because not only can it play games but it will allow them to watch blu-rays and stream from Netflix. It's a really important feature to families.

If Nintendo are concerned about the price being too high I can only imagine what this thing is going to cost in New Zealand. Hopefully it doesn't release any good games to taunt me.

It's not like only one person can play the game at a time. One person can use the Wii U controller, and the rest can use wiimotes.

I know. Most households have a DVD player or at the very least a computer. I haven't heard of a single computer that can't play a DVD nowadays. If the house has a TV there's a good chance it has HDMI too. DVD/blu-ray is hardly their concern as far as profitability goes because it's a different market. It's sony and microsoft that market towards home entertainment, and that shouldn't dictate Nintendos hardware decisions just to compete at the cost of making the console less profitable. You forget that this console is going to sell f'uck tons of units regardless of this feature simply because it's cool and Nintendo knows it. With their competition, it's the other way around. Nintendo is innovative and they try to copy that and fail. Hard.
I dunno about the controller thing. It looks pretty slim. I can't imagine it being too much heavier than an iPad.

Don't blu-ray players play DVD's too?
By 2012 blu-ray is going to see another price decrease mind you. If you're going to buy a ridiculously expensive gaming console you aren't just looking to what is useful for you and your family. Average joe white suit most definitely wouldn't participate in non-nintendo game fare and a lot of said fare probably too intense for your friends 6 year old to handle. The majority of nintendo stuff is kid friendlier and a lot more addicting usage wise than the competition. The point of this thread would be more of a deal breaker for family use than the lack of DVDs/blu-ray anyway.
The wii can stream netflix too. I'd be surprised if this wouldn't.

This leads to arguing and bickering over who gets the Wii U remote etc etc.
