TOKYO -- Nintendo was targeted in a recent online data attack, but no personal or company information was lost, the Japanese maker of the Wii game console said Sunday.

The server of an affiliate of Nintendo Co.'s U.S. unit was accessed unlawfully a few weeks ago, but there was no damage, company spokesman Ken Toyoda said.

"There were no third-party victims," Toyoda said, while declining to elaborate. "But it is a fact there was some kind of possible hacking attack."

The damage from what could be a recent spate of such data breaches targeting big-name brands was more serious at rival Sony Corp.

Sony has said massive personal information, including email addresses, names and birth dates, and involving more than 100 million users, is suspected of having been stolen after security was compromised in April for its network service for the PlayStation 3 game machine, for other online services and, in the past week, from Sony Pictures' website.

It is still unclear who is behind the attacks at Sony or Nintendo, based in Kyoto.

Hackers calling themselves Lulz Security – a reference to the Internetspeak for "laugh out loud"_ have recently boasted of compromising more than 1 million users' personal information.

Tokyo-based Sony has said it is strengthening security measures. It has contacted the FBI and other authorities for an investigation into the cyber attacks.

Looks like they should focus on their hacking protection more...

If only the basement dwelling fucktards could keep their pathetic fingers out of the god damn virtual cookie jar. They screw with my PS3, my maple fun goes down the drain with each exploit and now they seem to go after any company that produces fun stuff. What will be next? Hacking into my espresso maker and ruin my perfect espressos?

And it is at this point it became a good thing they nintendo themself doesn't actually keep debit/credit card information when you enter it on wii/dsi.

However, from the horses mouth so to speak, "lulzsec" as they call themself had this to say a few hours after they hacked nintendo

"LulzSec said on Twitter "that it hoped Nintendo plugged the gap, and later confirmed that the security hole it had identified had been fixed.""

Check mts, Your perfect espressos got hacked, then duped by the thousands!

OnTopic: Being honest this is so fucking stupid.. Its one thing hacking a harmless 2D game, but going after major companies, stealing personal information. The internet is getting more and more dangerous each day, and it sickens me that people drop to this level, I hope something changes soon and these hackers get what is coming to them.

To be honest, I doubt stealing personal information has been the goal in Sonys/Nintendos case. More of an revenge (Anonymous) and/or a way of showing people how weak the security was in these companies.

In other words "Lulz Security"

At least, as far as the media goes, Nintendo is in better light than Sony is over these hackings.

hey, i dont check this forum all the time, and i know you are a sony fan-girl LOL.
but hey, nintendo fixed the "exploit" after a few hours, while took sony 1 month? LOL
and its not generic, they hacked nintendo, but didnt steal ANY FUCKING INFORMATION FROM NINTENDO SERVERS.
again, did itunes get hacked? no, did xbox get hacked? no, did steam get hacked? no, did blizzard get hacked? no, how is this generic garbage? lol
My points are still valid, that sony had no security whatsoever because they thought that the ps3 was unhackable.

Yeah let's just assume that other companies were on guard expecting to be targeted next. That would be applying common sense afterall.

And microsoft not hacked? Hotmail says hi.

You know, it'll be funny as hell if Nintendo lied about this just to make Sony feel like idiots.

They don't need to make it seem like they were insulting Sony, to insult Sony. Their being decent about it is a jab to Sony all by itself.
