Skype

If one were to compare Skype to MSN Messenger, which would one say is superior to the other?
How do you use it if you have it?

I don't really want to compare the two since they have pretty different purposes. Skype is obviously more widely used and known for it's video and call features, but you can still send instant messages. MSN more based on it's instant messaging, in my opinion. I have to say I like skype more, because I prefer to talk while I do things on my computer vs typing in chat. Though having both on beats either one of them alone, really.

I only use skype for calls/ video. I'll only really use the IM's to ask if someone's there/ if they want to talk, etc.

Skype is perfect for video conferences, but the chat system lags awfully and isn't very reliable. If you were only going to message then definitely go and use IRC, Facebook Chat, or an instant messenger, but if you wanted video then Skype is your best bet.

MSN>Skype. Skype is really just voice call oriented and is great for group chats. But MSN is better for everything else.

As Kurtle said, Skype's "instant" messaging is terrible (most of the time) but its voice- and video-chats can't be beat.

edit@blueruin: By old school do you mean, southeast asian? At least in North America, Yahoo is considered pretty obsolete and pretty much has been since the inception of the internet. Unless you're southeast asian. Then it's apparently the pomegranate...

I prefer skype over msn and i use it for both text and voice chat.

I much prefer Skype. However, I have both Skype and Adium running. Since Adium can put my MSN, AIM and Facebook chat all in the same place, it's somewhat convenient. But I'd rather everyone just got Skype.

I use Google Talk for everything.

I've tried Skype before, but that was to receive classes from a professor in Romania, it's pretty cool for that. I don't think it works as good for instant messaging.

As for MSN, it's the one I started with, but after a couple of years it started to get flooded with people I added over those years and now it's just annoying to login into, so I don't use it anymore.
