What do you suggest I do with answers that imply the same thing but are different in how they're articulated?

Consider them anyway, if people misinterpret the question it's their own fault (unless you are considering anti-sheep), just don't consider if it's totally out of it.

If they're roughly the same thing give them points and just make a note next to the name maybe.

Not what I meant. For example, if there was a question asking you to name an exercise, what do you want me to do if one person says "jumping jack" and someone else describes a Jumping Jack?
