You know, people in this thread have a good point; you know what happens when kids are playing and one keeps cheating? They stop playing with him and that lonely kid learns a good lesson.
However, online, people just won't stop playing with them. So that lesson never applies.
Its at the point now, where I once detested the idea of using my SSN just to play a freaking online game, I'm now somewhat willing if it would mean being able to play a much less hacked game since every hacker and 'gold seller' would be perma-banned by SSN.
Yeah who's got the balls to fake those and get caught?

You sure about that? Giving your SSN to a a company with faulty database security like Nexon?

Haha, we had the same idea it seems. I was in the middle of typing this up in another thread but came to check this thread out cause it seemed like a more fitting place to post it:
Have registration require matching names & social security numbers, which would be verified somehow. Then ban by social security #. Since it would require a working SSN with a matching name, it's not easily faked. Stop auto bans and have bans by SSN issued only via GMs directly. That way we wont have any of those ("omg unfair auto bans").
BUT since people want to have multiple accounts.... allow for multiple accounts to be created under the same ssn/name. If a bunch of people all try to use the same ssn, and one of them is a hacker, then every account under that ssn is banned. This would discourage players from letting others use their ssn (which would be outright stupid in the first place anyways).
There's no reason someone should be getting your ssn in the first place. And if the person is dumb enough to give away their ssn to random ass websites (instead of the usual giving away usernames/pwords) then it'll affect more than their internet life. So hopefully that will discourage a good number of people from being complete idiots. Ssn would only be asked for at account creation (https webpage) and entered via softkeyboard like PICs so the person shouldn't be typing it over and over and get it stolen via keyloggers. The SSNs would not be stored in an online server but would be in an offline computer updated by transfer (as in taking new account names/SSNs and transfering them over via usb or something). Mostly done to prevent database hacking and having your ssn's stolen.
I onno, something like that. There'd be tons more to it.
It fixes:
Hackers making other accounts just to hack on and get off without punishment
Banning wrong people
IP bans being bypassed by changing IP/Mac address.
It requires:
1)Work on nexon's end (reason #1 why it wont happen)
2)Hiring GMs to be on at peak hours to ban hackers
--The time needed for them to remain on would decrease as more bans by SSN are issued. After all, not like you can just fake more SSNs with matching names.
3)Actually banning hackers
--Interesting theory on this end... nexon higher ups might actually want hackers. During the events when hackers cause the mass deflation of items... certain people rush to buy nx to buy the necessary CS items to make use of the cheap items. Other people start selling WGs/other items in the MTS for cheaper to get nx quickly... this causes people who like to buy cheap MTS gloves with actual nx to rush off to buy nx to rake in the good deals from people desperate to get nx. Also, people start buying nx for higher ratios. It all sounds rather nice for nexon. People are pissed off sure, but they get to rake in quite a bit of money.
But then again this is just rambling on my part. I'd say I dont particularly care... but somewhere deep inside I still kind of do... kind of. But for the most part, I'm just sitting back and watching the game collapse little by little. And unlike a few people, I'm not gonna be constantly complaining about how much the game sucks or anything.... because it doesn't in my eyes. I really do hope something good happens in the future. I look forward to it really. But in the mean time, I've got myself occupied with other things anyways.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Guess I do need to be a bit on topic...
So I logged in a few days before the coin exploit hit big. Managed to get myself 4 chaos scrolls rather quickly. I was gonna save up a bunch more to make myself an awesome lvl 120 mech engine. Alas... fail hits D:
Had an extra 400m on me, so I could've bought a ton and mass scrolled engines before the game got taken down... but I knew that that wouldn't be right and would be asking for trouble.

Ya know, the whole SSN thing seems like a great idea. but theres no way in heck I'm giving nexon my SSN.
With their track record if we had to give them our SSN's there'd be an incident that makes the whole Sony PSN debacile look tame.

That's why I said that the way to fix that would be to store SSNs in an offline computer.
Anywho, this is getting off topic, back to the coin exploit~

Americans are very protective of things like Social Security numbers because they're worried of things like fraud, which is extremely common. Not to mention introducing a policy that required SSN's to play the game would hurt Nexon's profits greatly.

The large population of people that play this game is between the ages of 13 - 16 I'd say. So, just imagine this conversation:
CHILD: "Mom, what's my social security number?"
MOM: "What do you need that for?"
CHILD: "I'm signing up for a game online and it's requesting my social security number."
MOM: "What game needs a social security number? Just don't play that game."

Isn't that already a requirement in KMS?
Wait wait, this isn't the place for this.
We'll leave it at... it wont happen. Would be nice if it could be pulled off successfully with neither side taking a hit from it, but it's just not happening.
Once again, back to the coins +exploiting.
I'm foreseeing a very slight influx in nx for nexon as a result of this, oddly enough. Those desperate enough to make mesos back that they lost might be willing enough to buy nx to go gaching. Not saying this will be huge of course.
I wonder what impact this'll have on Chaos (events, not scrolls).
Oh on that note... why remove chaos scrolls from the trade-in* list permanently. T.T
Punishes people who were looking forward to getting some legitimately but have stopped due to these events. D:

What they SHOULD do is make you show proof of identity. Using social security numbers is a bit if a personal identification security risk. :|
When you sign up and play (and when you go to log in after they implement the thing), they should make you have a photocopy of your ID, proof of residency (to prevent foreigners outside the service region) and possibly birth certificate to prove you are who you claim you are.
It should be just like getting a driver's license or getting a job.

Oh that's easy to figure out. It's just a function of your birthday, city, and real name anyways:
it's in the format of
xxx-xx-xxxx
((Note: to figure it out... you need to know how to do modular arithmetic. The easy explanation is with an example.
9 mod 6 = 3 because when you divide 9 by 6, you get three as the remainder.
So for example 15 mod 7 is 1. This is because 15, when divided by 7, yields a result of 1.
To find this number you can always just subtract the 7 from the 15 until you get a number less than 7. 15 -7 = 8 (keep going). 8 - 7 =1 (stop here) ))
You see:
the first three numbers are the last numbers in your birthday segments of MM/DD/YY, but then you do funky stuff with them.
So if you were born on jan 1st of 1980 -> 01/01/80
Then the first three digits are 110. You then raise this number to the power of the day you were born and take it mod 1000.
So you'd have 110^(1) mod 1000 which is still 110. There will be overlaps of course, but the next two parts take care of that:
The next two numbers are also a bit tricky: For that you have to take your hair color upon birth in RGB scale, which will then be converted to hex.
It'll be in the form of yy-yy-yy where y is between 0-9 and a-f. You take the month you were born in (mod 6) and the day you were born in (mod 6). And whatever numbers you get determine what position to use from the yy-yy-yy form for your two middle ssn's.
Ex: say your hex is fa-51-9a and your birth month is september, the 9th month. Well 9 (mod 6) = 3 thus you use the third number (5). ((if you were born in january you'd use f, but since f isn't a number you convert it to decimal and take it mod 10. In this case f = 15 in decimal (mod 10) = 5.))
Since your birthday is 1/1/80, you would use 1(mod 6) as your first number spot and 1 (mod 6) as your 2nd spot. Meaning you'd take that f twice which translates to 5 and 5.
So your SSN so far is 110-55-xxxx
The last four digits are done by gender. With a code: Male = 1, female = 2, other = 4. (done in powers of 2, so dont ask about why there's no three.) Basically you take your birth city's name. Take the total length of the city's name, raised to the power of your gender code then raise that to the power of your birth month + date and take it (mod 10000). In this example's case:
Let's say the city is 12 letters long. And the person is a female recall birth date is 1/1/80. We'll take 12 ^2 (which is 144).
Then we take 144 ^ (1+1) which is 20736. We mod this by 10000 to get 736.
So your SSN is:
110-55-0736
Hope this helped :3

i don't even *brainfail*
there are so many questions i have to ask, i won't even, and go googleducate myself instead.
EDIT:
Quote:In the United States, a Social Security number (SSN) is a nine-digit number issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary (working) residents under section 205©(2) of the Social Security Act, codified as 42 U.S.C. ยง 405©(2). The number is issued to an individual by the Social Security Administration, an independent agency of the United States government. Its primary purpose is to track individuals for taxation purposes.[citation needed]
A Social Security number may be obtained by applying on Form SS-5, "Application for A Social Security Number Card".[1]
By 2005 the SSN has become a de facto national identification number.
yea, THAT'S my problem in bolded. as i thought, it's a U.S. thingie

It's not only a United States thing. Korea has it as well, as do several other countries. To sign up for kMS, it requires one, and most Korean MMOs require one.

i know, however, this isn't USMS is what i meant, people from different places with different ways of assigning a SSN will try to play, if it was like KMS, which is korea-only, then i would see it ok, but seeing how it's global MS, not everyone who qualifies to play can have a SSN.
that's why i agree with shikage, provide proof of who you are to play.
THEN AGAIN, not like it's gonna be implemented.
