I got a 29 on my first try. I wanted a 30+...

I hate testing.

What college are you applying too such that you need the ACT? Most colleges just need SAT lol.

Take it multiple times. You can always get better and they only take your highest. Do it at least 3. I know it's a bunch of money, but it's worth it if you get 1 point higher. I only took it once, but I wish I could go back in time and do it again at least once more.

Same here, only it was my first try. Fell asleep during the science portion for about a minute or two as well. It didn't help me get any free money though =\

It changes from state to state, I believe. My state mandates taking the ACT, and I have only seen the SAT requirement on private, expensive schools. Unless you're made of money, I do not see any reason that you would need an SAT score. In my State at least.

That said, I don't think most schools care which one you have. If the SAT is easier to do well on (No idea if it is, have not taken it) then go ahead and take it.

I've always heard it referred to as the SAT is mainly required by schools on the east and west coasts while the ACT is required by the Midwest. Almost every school I looked at around Missouri had a ACT requirement. I'm sure it just depends on what school, though.

I wish I took the ACT instead of the SAT when I was applying to college. The ACT seemed more like an exam you could prepare for, and less of a test of general intelligence.

I'm not saying that at all. My only point was that if he could use more money for school, the 50 dollar fee (or whatever) is totally worth it.

Because I scored a 32 on the ACT and I didn't receive any additional money besides what's given to everyone who enteres the U of A with a 3.0+ high school GPA.
I applied to a good number of scholarships and a few of them only required a 25+ ACT if anything, and some didn't even require any ACT score. Looking back on it now, any standardized test like that is a pointless formality. I have friends who received fantastic academic grants and hadn't even taken the ACT.
I feel like the real secret to "getting into college" or "getting scholarships" isn't you test scores, it's the ability to write. If you can write a killer essay to a scholarship (along with whatever else they require) you're golden. If anything, it's just one other hoop to jump through so that those more so academic schools can see you as something slightly more interesting than the usual student. But they'll still judge you more so on the personal statement than a number.

The number is so there so that they don't accidentally read any "killer essays" written by people who "failed" the requirements and give scholarship money to the wrong people. I'm sorry you're pissed that you're unable to get any scholarship money from your ACT score, but guess what... you should have realized while you were still in high school that standardized tests don't get you scholarship money unless the money is directly from the testing companies themselves.

Even though I scored higher on the SAT, I liked the ACT better. The SAT is worded to confuse and trick the readers into solving the wrong problems. It took me over a year of practice to raise my score by a lousy 230 points.

Missouri has this thing known as Bright Flight - score a 32 or higher on the ACT, get $2k per year for up to 4 years of school (went down to $1.5k, but still nice compared to 0 with anything lower). The school also offered me a scholarship based on my academics - when I raised my 29 to a 33, they gave me a lot more money (I believe it went up from 5-6k to about 11k per year). I also go to a private college, which could be why this has no impact for him (I somehow have it in my mindset that he's going to an Arizona state school?).
