There has been a lot of controversy in my country recently about huge toughening up of copyright laws.
I'm honestly dreading September so much.

Watching survivor on youtube would be illegal for me to do
Listening to music on youtube would be illegal for me to do
Playing really old games that can no longer be obtained legally would be illegal for me to do.
Even things like me playing DFO could get me into pomegranate with NZ laws.

Oh wow, that sucks. Even stuff like music on YouTube is to be targetted. Though from what I've read, if they have to pay $14-20 to send an infringement notice I guess they won't be that happy to start sending them by the thousands. It does suck though.

I'm sure a few tens of thousands of dollars is nothing to the likes of the MPAA if they think it would mean scaring people away from piracy.

Guess what, this law is our pathetic government sucking the metaphorical dick of US copyright holders. As soon as your government shows any sign of allowing it, get ready.

The passing of this law also took advantage of the relaxing of requirements for passing new laws that was put in place to assist the christchurch earthquake recovery.
My biggest concern is privacy. You get accused of pirating? (Whether you did it or not). You can say good bye to your privacy!

That's not entirely what happened, Heidi. Parliament did not pass it under relaxed rules put in place for Christchurch, they passed it under urgency. Under urgency, a bill can bypass all public / academic opinion, have all 3 readings and be passed in ONE night. That night, Parliament was sitting under urgency to pass laws relating to dealing with the earthquake but HEY LET'S BE COMPLETE AND UTTER SLIME BALLS AND SURPRISE EVERYONE BY ONLY THAT NIGHT TACKING ON AN EXTREME BILL THAT HASN'T BEEN DEBATED SINCE NOVEMBER AND HAS LITERALLY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE!
Needless to say, everyone is pissed. But what makes people even more outraged is these politicians, the ones with the sole right to make our laws, have clearly demonstrated their absolute and baffling ignorance in regards to technology. One woman constantly reiterated that -file sharing- is completely illegal, where another man said the internet is a mirror of Skynet from Terminator. As such, this is dubbed the "Skynet" bill.

I love the way laws work, there's always a way to find a stupid loophole to get what you want. They are also so long and boring to read so that only lawyers can understand them.

I heard about the Skynet thing. These people don't even know what the pineapple they're talking about.

For the record, the previous Labour (NZ equivalent of democrats) government used urgency about 12-15 times in their 9 years of being in power. The current National (NZ equivalent of Republicans) government has not even completed their first 3 year term and have used it about 20 times. Cowards.

And just because the labour party doesn't have very good leadership at the moment, it is likely national will get in again at this years election.
I'll be semi abstaining and voting for the greens this year I think.

What the sh'it is this.
Oh gosh, hope this doesn't come to Australia. I can definitely see some monkey taking this idea & applying it to our country.

Time for huge amounts of encryption and routing packets all over the place before routing them to my computer in order to protect my privacy should I get falsely accused under this law (Routing packets everywhere won't work with youtube due to speed issues)
As Grag (Spaz/ LHCGreg/ whatever) said in a private IRC conversation to me the other day...
[13:29:13] <LHCGreg> Well, they do have the right to enforce copyright
[13:29:34] <LHCGreg> But accidentally viewing a copyrighted video (or not knowing it's copyrighted and not used with permission)...
[13:29:45] <LHCGreg> That shouldn't be punishable
[13:30:10] <LHCGreg> And it's very easy for, as an example, someone to post a youtube link on a forum or IRC channel, and someone else to click it without even knowing what it is

Yeah, really. They should be going against the people that host copyrighted material on YouTube, not the ones viewing it.
Though if you download copyrighted material it's another thing entirely.

Youtube should be just the hosters in trouble. It's sometimes hard to even know if something is copyrighted.
Torrenting should be where the main focus of enforcement is.
