What kind of anime are you into?
#1
Serious question (but I'm still going to be expecting dumb answers, from certain people). I'm asking purely out of curiosity. When it comes to anime, and this question is more-so for people that watches new anime that usually comes out. What makes you 'stick' to an anime series? What kind of stuff do you usually 'drop'?

I'm open to any genre. I like to have a lot of variety when choosing what I'm going to watch for a new season. Although, I am very fond of slice of life, and romance to a lesser degree. I use anime as a way to relax after a long day, so shows like Aria are great.

I also look back and question my reasons for watching some shows (mainly Kampfer and White Album) but I realized how suborn I was back then because I outright refused to drop shows. I'm glad I'm past that phase.

Kinda like how I was with Ladies vs Butlers & To Love Ru. If we're talking about how I am currently, I'd drop things in a heartbeat if it seems terrible at first glance. There are some small occasions in which I'd keep watching ANYWAYS, just to see if sh`it gets anywhere. Which, they never do (ex: Yosuga no Sora. I knew it was going to end terribly, I knew it was going to be sh`it, I watched it anyways. It was sh`it at the end. /expected results)

Yeeeeah, so I understand that feeling QUITE well.

I watch mostly things that catch my eye, and in some ways by things that are normal in animes. I will probably settle towards less things as time moves on, but at this time, Im open to a lot of different things. Mostly though, I tend to watch comedies, purely because the jokes and comedic actions in an anime have to be above and beyond what you would see in an average TV show.

For shows that I drop, It normally has to do with how long a show goes without anything interesting happening. A case in point would be Fortune Arterial, which mentioned early on that there was some kind of vampire connection, but never did anything with it until about 8~9 episodes in, which is stupid for a 12 episode show. Looking back, I should have dropped that show, purely because it had little laughs and the interesting points were barely there. To bring it around, a show like Freezing was interesting to me, but not to a lot of other people. Everyone wanted to drop it right away because of the protagonist and the fan service, but to me the show was just barely starting, and the fan service took nothing away from the show for me.

I tend to watch adventure, romance, slice of life, supernatural, psychological, and drama. The genres can go together in any combination that doesn't include mecha or ecchi; however, I can tolerate ecchi in some cases where the show has other qualities to make up for it. The only show that contained mecha that I actually liked was TTGL (God that show was awesome!), but that show defies logic in every possible way (I even liked the rap song that went along with the show, and I HATE rap music).

I tend to drop shows that lose my interest, which happens quite often for shows that go longer than 25 episodes or so. I also drop shows that I consider to be outright bad, but if I'm far enough along before I stop liking the show, then I'll probably just finish it to be done with the story.

I tend to like Anime that break the norm (Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Madoka, eva, Panty and Stocking, Baccano!, Haruhi etc) so I'm generally happy to watch any genre as long as it tries to break from the norm.

Aside from that, I really like anime that makes you have to think in order to understand the story and also has complex characters that you get to know better as the series advances.
As for real genres, I tend to like action in my anime, but it's not enough to make me like it, if it's only battle scenes I'll get bored. I can relate to comedy if it's well made (I've really enjoyed Lucky Star, Azumanga Dayoh ans SZS). It also has to have a good ending, series that make an awesome journey through their middle episodes but fail to deliver a well made ending are a let down and the last impression is the longer lasting one.

So in conclusion, I'll be always on the watch for GAINAX stuff. My anime needs to have some randomness in it as well as new concepts.
I also can't bring myself to watch very long series. If you can't get its point across in maximum 50 episodes then it's either a very long shoujo (which will probably have a pomegranatety ending since they care mostly for the journey, not the end) or an episodic anime that will squeeze its content to the max.

I hardly ever drop a series, instead I choose very well before starting to watch something.

I tend to enjoy animes with well-developed themes and some aspect of social/philosophical commentary. Slice of life is often a good vehicle for that. But there are plenty of animes I like that don't fit into that.

I never ever drop a series.

Shoujo targets a wide female audience, so yeah, that's probably what you like. I don't watch a lot of Shoujo stuff, though I read it more (manga). It's hard to find good ones to watch anyways, stuff's usually dragged-out too much (imo). ` ~`
