RateMyProfessors

Does anybody else use this? How reliable do you think it is? I've been using this as of recent, since without it, I end up being in sh`it-tier classes with terribad professors that cannot teach. So far, it's really helping me because I'm keeping a heads-up on which professors I'll get for specific classes, to ensure myself that I'll learn during class too. Instead of just doing all of the learning by myself outside of classes..

I recently checked a lot of the scores for some of the professors that I thought were 'bad', I wasn't too surprised at some of the ratings, because they were accurate. I checked some professors that I plan on having for the upcoming semester, and the majority of them have near a 3.8-4.5 overall score. So I know next time around, I'll get ones that can properly teach their students.

I've actually done a few ratings with worthwhile comments on some professors, myself. Especially ones that I thought deserved to have honorable mentions because they are a great professor, etc.

I use a bit of caution when reading these, mainly where there is a small sample of ratings available for the instructor. Such as the case of two ratings, one is 0/5 (like someone who blamed the instructor for everything gone wrong) and another 5/5 (Someone who truly has done fair work and evaluation in the class to come to this), which average to some 2.5, which will not be helpful in that case. Otherwise, considering the comments available and see if it is the student or the instructor that has issues concerning the ratings.

Since I remember using this once and found out that a certain instructor really did not really rate high, but when I actually went through the class, and did the work accordingly, it was not as bad as the comments made it out to be, so in that case, there might have been issues with the students rating the instructor rather than the instructor itself.

Yes, naturally when there are cases that have a strong overall positive (or negative) comments, then it is a pretty good indicator on the instructor, but that is not always the case, but yes, still useful in getting an idea of what's ahead in a semester definitely.

I never use it, have known it's existence since middle school, but don't have any qualms as to it's credibility. It's a reference at the very least. Better than having no f'ucking clue what to expect when going into a course.

People who pass rate high, people who fail rate low. That place is horrible. It also has a rate "hotness" which makes it completely useless because the users of that site are also out for a flirt with the professors for a percent or two boost in grade and disregard for actual academic integrity. But hey, that's life.

This is why I use a combination between reviewum and RMP. It's a good reference if more than one website says the same thing about someone AND there are multiple submissions.

And @above. That's not always the case. The vast majority would probably do that but I know many people who passed with a very high grade rate the professor with a low score saying they had to "kiss ass" just to pass it.

I prefer going into it blind. That way you don't let other people influence you on how you think the professor is.

It would be cool to have something like this for my university, but probably ineffective as courses don't usually have more than 2 choices of professors. If you get a choice at all.

I use it all the time. Most of the time it's about right.
Sometimes, it's just the teacher's pets that rate them 5/5 and give "OMG BEST TECHAR EVARR A++++" and then there are the people who failed the class and raged so gave the instructor 0/5 with a "FUCKING DOUCHEBAG FAILED ME wtp!!"
You basically have to use your head and decide which seem real, credible, sound more realistic, use common sense, find the average, etc.

Question: As long as I've grasped the materials (before the course), the teacher's quality or the lack thereof should not matter, is that correct? Or is there a hidden attribute to the US way of studying that I am not aware of? Perhaps, idk, the professor can deduct points off my GPA for... not remember to great details the definition of random theorems?

If you fully understand the concepts before the class starts, you're in great shape. But if you're a complete beginner, knows nothing, and you consider yourself an 'average' student at best, expect hell when you realize you have a sh`it professor.

Me and my bestfriend have been doing checks on which professors to take, because we're pretty new to some classes, and don't want to just rush in thinking that we'll magically learn just by being in the class. Suddenly, we have a shittastic professor and when exams comes by, over half of the class fails because the person cannot teach for sh`it. It depends on the student too, if you're studying a lot, and attending class constantly, you should be fine.

Some professors MIGHT deduct points for missing classes, some won't, though they do count attendance, and after missing so many classes, you insta-fail.

Goddamned family expects a 3.8 and I don't want my ignorance to put me at any risk. ;_;

It really differs from professor to professor. I do know of ones that are extremely strict, actually, my very FIRST VB professor was like this. You can have the entire thing right, with the correct solution, but if there's one thing that you did wrong, whether it's minor or not, he'll deduct a large chunk of points from your total score. But I would like to think that most people won't do this. It really does depend. >_>; I don't think everyone's always out to get you, but you have to remember that some professors really wants to eliminate the weakest link by making classwork hell.

I know of ONE professor on my campus that everyone that majors in IT knows about, and he always gives a sh`itload of work. Nobody likes him. Also, because of that, other IT professors will be more lenient to their students because they know about said person. So yeah. Just be warned. There are some insane.. professors out there. <___<;

what really shafts you is if the proffessor gives you a rubric, then switches it up the last minute expecting an email to hit every ear in north america. I had a very tough time with my L/A* professor because she would switch up the homework. It got to the point where I barely got past with a C and it was because I did all the homework beforehand, I got shafted 3/7 times because of her doing that.

She got fired like 4 weeks later after an entire class reported her undecisive behavior lol.

I use both RateMyProfessors and UCSD CAPE. I've yet to see inaccurate results.
