Pokemon Black - Nuzlocke challenge
#1
i enjoy nuzlocke challenges more than playing the game regularly so i decided to play an entirely new game i know nothing about with a set of challenge rules. i'll post updates in this thread. here are the rules i'll be using (and if you don't know what a nuzlocke challenge is, this oughta explain it):

The Nuzlocke Challenge is a set of rules intended to create a higher level of difficulty while playing the Pokémon games. Many challengers feel that the rules also serve the purpose of encouraging the use of Pokémon the player would not normally choose, and promoting closer bonds with the player's Pokémon. The rules are not an in-game function, but are self-imposed on the part of the player, and thus subject to variation.

-Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.

-The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.

-All Pokemon must be nicknamed.

-Master Balls are banned.

-Pokecenters can only be used after a gym battle or rival battle. Only healing items can be used otherwise.

-Legendaries cannot be caught and must be defeated.

-The player may not evolve captured Pokémon, but evolved Pokémon may be caught. I'm not sure about this one, I'll have to see how it goes.

-Rare Candies are obviously banned.

-Held items are banned.

first update coming soon.

Sounds fun. Always found Nuzlocke challenges pretty interesting. Haven't attempted one myself, yet, though.

I have never seen the "No PokeCenter unless after a Gym Battle or Rival Battle" clause, or the "Can't evolve your Pokemon" one, ever before. Seems like that's a little too restrictive.

This rule was not part of the official rules when it was first created on /v/. Therefore it is STUPID!

You can pretty much create your own rules, but I do find that rule stupid. One of the main reasons it was created, aside from making the game harder, was to feel a stronger sense of attachment to your Pokemon and value them more. You build a team, and you stick with that team and try to make them work. I guess you could still do this even with that rule, but you'll be more inclined to throw out Pokemon for newer ones rather than keeping the ones you have close.

that's kind of why i'm not sure if i'll be using it. i came up with it because i was like "well, if i'm really attached to that pokemon then i'll be choosing bond over strength", but i wasn't really sure how i felt about it. i'll probably just go ahead and throw it out. and for running out of PP, well, i'll just have to use high PP moves. and i'll probably adjust the Pokecenter rule to where i'll only use it if my team really needs it, while making a case for having to make a trip, with a free use after gym/rival.

I see no rule dealin with breedin

I'll prob do this in Diamond once I get my 3DS.

Other rules I've seen:
No TM usage (Flash in B/W is ok)
No using Fly

Interesting predicaments are possible in Nuzlocke that also sometimes call for a "HM" clause - allowing you to catch a new pokemon if necessary to use an HM, on the grounds that you release it when it's no longer needed

A question about the Nuzlocke challenge:
Would you be able to use a Pokemon you received in a city, if it was the first you received in the city?
eg. Eevee from Bill, or winning a Pokemon from a prize
Reply

Yup, but that's the only pokemon you can get from that City. If you realized, say, that you can fish up something but already got an eevee, you have to stick with the eevee.

>have to stick with eevee.
eevee is a boss pkmn to get during a Nuzlocke Hurt

B/W are designed so that trainer battles are more plentiful and involve fewer (nearly all trainers have only 1-2 Pokemon) but higher levelled pokemon that are actually meant to do some damage to your team. Random encounters are much weaker than usual and provide very little experience with the modified experience system and can be skipped entirely except for to catch the Pokemon you want. Oh, and both your rivals hound you incessantly and you pretty much have to fight them after every gym. It'll definitely be a different and more difficult experience doing Nuzlocke in these games.

There are doctors halfway through all the routes to heal your Pokemon (after defeating them). How do you propose dealing with them?

I'm going to Nuzlocke my HG version when I get it.

These rules will apply;
Quote:-Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released.

-The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.

-All Pokemon must be nicknamed.

Gonna get some classic nuzlocke up in here.

I find the forced releasing of pokemon, and the MUST KILLINATE LEGENDARIES parts to be kind of stupid. :| But then again, I cherish the pokemon on my team and legendaries too much for my own good <_< If I were to ever do a nuzlocke challenge, I would just throw the pokemon in the PC in a "fainted" box, not release them.

Yeah that's what I've seen most people do if they're planning on keeping the file, avoid the legendaries and box fainted pokemon.
But yeah, the doctors and constant rival battles are gonna make this silly.

Got my game yesterday and I figure I'm doing this until I clear the game (credits).

I started playing it a while ago, barely starting. So far:

well i've adjusted the rules a little bit.

-The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances.

and the way I've always played them gift pokemon don't count as "first encountered" so I caught a Munna in the dreamyard. and since it's only the beginning of the game really the only thing notable was the intense gym battle because I was underleveled so here's a little mini-update.

Picked Snivy, named Boris
Route 1 - caught Patrat, named Pabst
Route 2 - caught Lillipup, named Roscoe
Dreamyard - one of the trainers here had an equally leveled Patrat as Pabst and landed a critical hit on Pabst with Tackle, bringing it down to ONE HP. it scared the pomegranate out of me. continued on, got a Panpour and named it Brine.

Striarton Gym - walked through, put Brine at the lead and gave him an Oran Berry to hold. Brine leveled to 11 through the trainers, and then I faced the gym leader. Chili's Lillipup used Work up and then Bite, and caused yet another too close for comfort crit on Brine, bringing him down to 5 hp, with the Oran Berry bringing it back up to 15. yet again I freaked the pineapple out and switched to Boris who Vine Whipped the Lillipup out, which leveled Brine up to 12. switched to Roscoe when Chili sent out Pansear, used a potion on Brine, brought him back out and let Brine get his revenge on Chili with a couple of water guns. it was a pretty exciting battle but considering I was underleveled it was too close for comfort.

dreamyard - story progression blah blah, kicked the pomegranate out of some Plasma members, caught a Munna, named it Musha.

that's where I stopped. my current team: OH WAIT AS I BOOT UP MY SAVE IT LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING AFTER GETTING BRINE NEVER HAPPENED. i swear to god i remember saving my game. ugh. well, my actual current team is this:

Snivy - Boris - Lv 11
Lillipup - Roscoe - Lv 10
Panpour - Brine - Lv 10
Patrat - Pabst - Lv 7

I don't like Patrats, I killed them if they were my first encounter. It's actually nice having a small team that I can easily raise equally (and Pansage, the HM Slave). Lillipup is probably one of the best early Pokemon you can get in any game, it's pretty tough and can dish out damage while taking some.

My current team is:
- Lv25 Gurdurr (Darunia)
- Lv23 Pignite (Din)
- Lv19 Herdier (Hyrule)
- Lv17 Petilil (Farore)
- Lv10 Pansage (Gay)

I'm in the big city, getting ready for the 3rd gym leader. I might head for the desert first, to see which Pokemon I get.

Are you going to play through normally after and if so can I have your legendaries (Reshiram and Tornadus, specifically) from this run for my collection? Haha.

I'm still not sure if I'll restart after or if I'll just carry on from there, but I'll see what happens after the game is cleared. : P
