Are whites racially oppressed?

Long article, so I'll put the text in spoilers.

Well, I've always hated the concept of affirmative action, particularly when it reaches a point of exclusive opportunities being awarded to minority/racial groups. There is a fairly strong "don't trust whitey/it's ok to make racial jokes about white folks/every white person is a cracker" mentality in America too. But I wouldn't go so far as to say racially oppressed.

I've always hated affirmative action. That doesn't fix the root of the problem.

Racially opressed? lolno...

I do think there is a pretty good rise of racial discrimination toward white people nowadays. I keep getting hate when I say something about it from people of other ethnicities, but I REALLY think it's true. All I hear is hate toward white people anymore and how white people are inferior.

Think of it, a white male doesn't get sh'it in America anymore. We don't have special college opportunities or special programs to help us out, but every other ethnicity does. Being a white male in the US, if you're not alpha-dog, you're f'ucked.

I didn't read the article, since it's too long for me to bother with right now, so I'm sorry if I pretty much made a redundant point.

Ask Eric Cartman. He probably knows.

As for equal rights, I simply believe that people should have equal rights and oppertunities regardless of race, religion, gender, etc. and that no laws should favor one race or gender (among other things) over another. For example, if women want equal rights, then they should also have to sign up for the selective service, just like how men are required by law (although I'd much rather prefer removing the selective service). Then things like Affirmative action should not exist as it does favour some people over others for factors that people have absolutely no control over.

While that would be an ideal society, it's not possible. Most opportunities given to people in this country are privately offered, such as businesses giving grants for research or scholarships for universities. It's never really going to happen as long as any business can be privately owned and not run by the government and well... since our country was originally designed to have limited government control over the people, it's not going to happen.

If private businesses want to be racists/sexists, I guess that is their choice (although in this day and age, that means taking a risk of backlash from the community).
Although, this is no excuse when it comes to laws in this country.

I doubt that's their intention. Sure, their opportunities and promotions towards certain groups may be unequal, but that's certainly far from being racist/sexist.

I honestly dont care about the intentions. Even the best of intentions dont always produce the best results.

Then, as long as you are going to discriminate based on the color of the skin, far as I'm concerned, it is racism. We are giving benefits to one race/gender and rejecting others from those same benefits based on those factors that are uncontrolable. The way it is now is like this:
"Kid one gets $100 to start his college fund because his skin is dark"
"Kid two gets nothing to start his college fund because his skin is lighter"

How is it not racist to give one kid money based on their skin color and not money to the other kid? And lets assume that the only difference is their skin color.

Some passages in that article just make me want to throw up.
Quote:Many white Americans have lived under the assumption that if they worked hard, they would be rewarded. Now more white Americans are sharing unemployment lines with "those people" -- black and brown, Wise says.

"For the first time since the Great Depression, white Americans have been confronted with a level of economic insecurity that we're not used to," he says. "It's not so new for black and brown folks, but for white folks, this is something we haven't seen since the Depression."
Basically saying that white people can't handle being at the same level as every other race. What the hell?

Quote:Peter Brimelow, author of "Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster," asserts that much of white America's anxiety derives from living under a black president and changing demographics.
Diversity, he says, "is not strength."
>white people are anxious because they have a black president

I don't even know how to respond to this. I can't believe that immigrants who took over land are scared of other immigrants taking their land.

The same argument can be said when looking at any other deciding or qualifying factor. How is it not discriminatory to give one kid money based on their degree choice and not money to the other kid? Simply put: it's not. Just because it involves race, especially when it's used to narrow down a certain demographic, doesn't instantly make it racist. Same goes for gender, sexual preference, etc.

The intention is that most black kids are starting out worse than everyone else. The decades of discrimination has left the, in the lower rungs of society so affirmative action hopes to pull more of them out.

'Course I disagree because I think you should just pump more cash into the lower rungs of society in the first place, but meh.

Degree choice is a choice. Skin Color is not.
Wasnt it MLK Jr. that said that he wanted people to be judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin?

@below: I would agree that it would be a step in the right direction. If we want to stop racism, then we must stop discriminating and making such a big deal about our racial differences, which should not matter.

I agree with Morgan Freeman. We need to get rid of black history month and the black Miss America pageant.
