The MAJOR debate over Holy Arrow
#21
People say HA is useless, because it technically is. It never really helps, and its use is very limited. The reason that you would want to max it is simply because you want to max it/have an extra attack.

I maxed HA and left my tele at 1 until I realized I LOVED to GPQ and needed max tele, soooo I maxed it in 3rd job and only have 1 point in both Door and Doom and that's suited me just fine.

You are calling someone's ideas stupid? You don't even have proper grammar. HA is useless, buddy.

Are people ignoring the fact that MP eater can act like seal? Once a monster runs out of MP, it won't cast magic skills anymore >_>

Course it doesn't matters when you're 1-2hkoing everything with Genesis, but in 7x-8x when you're hunting Death Teddies and stuff and taking 20-30 hits per monster it can help.

Does anyone happen to know what level Heal is stronger than HA on single targets? I'm sure it is at some point, cause it's the only Magician skill with exponential growth.

In order of usefulness, I'd put Cleric skills like that.
Heal
Invincible
Teleport
Bless
MP Eater
Holy Arrow

Russt Wrote:The more I think about it, Bless is pretty useless. The only stat that makes any difference is accuracy, and just about everyone including warriors nowadays have more than enough accuracy to 100% hit what they want to hit. The only time it might be helpful is at PQs and bosses, where warriors don't always have enough accuracy without Bless to 100%. But when the need arises, it's VERY crucial. Missing warriors don't contribute much to the party.

MP Eater saves several million mesos from 30-70, and several million more during priesthood. If you don't mind essentially buying a HA 'skillbook' for 30+ mil, go right ahead. But I believe the real choice is between HA and Bless.

Bless is NEVER useless. With what the Bishop becomes in 4th job it's not as huge an issue in 4th job, but TRY getting there without Bless... ugh. Priests can solo, but it's not an easy life; you're better off in a party with a warrior. Afrobean is right about the DK, but to that I'd add that the rest of the warriors want the same thing, and some godly Sader is a pretty good training partner. Most of the high end warriors nowadays try to reduce their Dexterity to increase their Strength. Ever notice how a 12 Dex earring costs a LOT more than a 10 Dex earring? Who do you think is buying them? If you stack those extra 2 points of Dex against the acc bonus of max Bless, it becomes pretty obvious. Put simply, having bless will allow low-dex or no-dex warriors to train in places where they otherwise wouldn't be able to train. So, you have a warrior, (even a 4th job warrior,) who will be looking for a regular party with a Priest or Bishop. If you have max Bless you will certainly be selected over someone with less than max Bless. It's not as big a catastrophe as the Priest who didn't go HS first, but it's pretty bad. I knew a Priest who only had 10 Bless, a lot of warriors simply wouldn't party her. And think about what you get for that huge pain in the ass; max Holy Arrow and MP Eater. It's simply not a good way to go.

Stereo: In 3rd job I tried the Ludibrium maps and the Haunted House. If you're able to hold your map, you're better off in HH, where MP eater seems to ensure that you spend no pots at all. I personally went straight from HH to Himes.

Afro: I personally haven't found MP eater to be helpful at all approaching to and in 4th job. My Gen is at lvl 20, which means I am spending 4k MP per Genesis attack. With Max Gen this will sink to 3500, but I've never really noticed MP eater to reduce my pot drain. That's why I call it worthless; it's nice when it saves on pots, but the moment you start using Gen over Heal, I don't think MP eater can help. Come to think of it, when using Heal at Himes it doesn't do that much either because you're taking damage almost every second you can take damage.

While I'm not contesting this, are you sure?

Leprechauns apparently have 0 mana and yet they stun people. I'm also fairly sure that I've continued draining a monster's mana way more than its max mana, which should imply that it could keep casting.

Personally, I like Holy Arrow - but as a fun skill. I think part of that is simply that I hate spamming heal, so I made an experimental cleric that's taking heal as her last skill (HA, Invincible, Tele, Bless, Heal).

She's going to be slow to level as molasses in January, so my opinion is that if leveling quickly is the point of the character, I don't think HA is necessarily the way to go - heal gives faster exp.

But, to me, HA is just more fun. If I heal-spam on my other cleric, I play for about 45 minutes at most before getting bored - and that character will probably never make 3rd job. With HA, I can go for hours, and I estimate I'll outlevel my other cleric (36/49 atm) within the month, and that's with leeching a HB-mule, just because I'm having fun.

I think what the debate needs to take into account more than anything is the personality of the player. If a player thinks HA is fun, then he/she should take it. If they don't plan to use it a lot, then it may not be worth it. Personal preference more than anything else should be the deciding factor.

The only flaw in this idea is that if a person doesn't like fighting with Heal like that, they're going to have a very hard time as a Holy Magician.

And for you, with your HA-"only" cleric... did you notice that fighting on it is EXACTLY the same as fighting with a Fire Wizard, except that you're locked into Holy-weak monsters instead? You also don't get the potential benefits of Med, Poison Breath, or the simple fact that Holy-weak monsters are generally not as apt to single target fighting as Fire-weak ones, at least at those lower levels.

Maybe you should consider playing a Cleric/Priest at all... all their jobs are about standing around spamming 1 mob skill. They never get a good single target attack like certain other classes (thieves, warriors, bowmen) do, and at most you'll be switching between SR and Heal depending if your party needs more HP or not.

I never had or used max HA, and thus I don't miss or regret not maxing it. Then again, I don't think MP eater saved me all that much in pots, either. IMO if you're talking about getting to fourth job and beyond, it doesn't really matter. If you're stopping at third job, eater helped me more then. Second job, I'd probably just max HA.

IF HA happened to have a base atk strogner than cold beam but weaker than Fire Arrow, would it be worth maxing then?

I still reckon HA is fairly useful no matter how many people keep saying its useless and not worth maxing. It has never let me down once and it never will =P.

This debate is lol.

Now, I've been lucky to try out both cleric routes (solo cleric route on SageFLip and the party cleric route on SageFiip), and really... I don't see much of a difference whether you have HA maxed or not. If you have HA, you can fend for yourself so that you can even out pot costs. If you max MP Eater instead, you just save up on money thus you can fend for yourself.

That pretty much sums up what it really should come down to. End of story.

Quantact Wrote:As for Holy Arrow, it's worthless. If you max all other 2nd job skills you'll have lvl 11 holy arrow. Those other skills have more of a long-term impact than Holy Arrow will. When you are training on strong undead monsters, Heal is a better attacking skill because it hits a lot of monsters and often lets you train without MG. MP Eater becomes worthless later on. But when I was training at Hoodoos and Voodoos, MP Eater allowed me to train completely without potions, which I liked.

I think his post best describes whether one should max holy arrow or not. Adding to what Quantact said, not maxing HA gives the player more pts to max the other skills that can carry over it's usefulness right until the 4th job. Btw i'm not debating how useful/bad HA is, but by maxing HA, you will not be able to max one of the following : MP Eater, Heal, Invincible, Teleport, Bless.

If HA happened to have a base attack stronger than Genesis, Heal would still be one heck of an efficient mobbing skill, and more than enough to carry you up through the levels.
