Nexon Japan is holding an event to give 1,200 free NP to a random 1000 people who use this security system. Of course, without a Japanese cellphone, I don't apply. =/
Anywho... I may be wrong about it, but wasn't this designed originally for World of Warcraft? I remember something about this a few weeks ago in a discussion about security. It seems Nexon Japan picked it up and it may be possible, if this works pretty well, that Nexon America may catch on and ask their players to do the same.

Aw, hell yes.
And I can't see how it's old when few of us can read it. This definitely gives jMS brownie points for thinking of the players.

Lol, I remembered a thread somewhere on Southperry about this.
Hopefully Nexon would consider using this.

This should actually make meso sellers scared. If this catches on in GMS, it will dramatically lower the amount of compromised accounts.

I meant that the security system information stuff is old.

Nope. SecurID's been around since at least '96 and WoW started in 2004 ish.
They may have been the first game to use it, but it's been used for corporate authentication for ages.

These coming to GMS would make me so happy.
At least then when databases are compromised, they can't blame it on the players.

Actually if that happened again they'd even more adamantly blame the players because the authenticators made it virtually full-proof.

inb4 someone finds a loophole in the security to bypass it, similar to PIN and PIC cracking :|
Also it's about freaking time Nexon started jumping on this. I really hope GMS gets this ASAP!

For authenticators, is there a limit of one per account? If you lost it would you be screwed forever or could you have it enabled on both a keychain and your cell phone? Is it run through a third party website or would Nexon be in charge of them still?

I think we covered all this last time. Generally no, generally yes, and "Nexon but they don't control the protocol so their screwup potential is limited".

Eos, I know what you mean. While it is old news, the only time that the security keys have been compromised by the middleman taking control of the victim's account and using a bit of keylogging to lock out the original user. I'd say that it is pretty much like the adage about mousetraps & better mice. Besides I'd love to see Nexon America, pull off one of Blizzard's better security moves by having the freebie authenticator for games. It beats any random little software keyboard any day.

Authenticators don't do squat if the game security is so janked they can move into your account just by CCing and bypass the authentication altogether.
Nexon publicly refused to believe that was possible last time, these would make them even more likely to dismiss issues as players' own faults.
As long as nexon's fixed all their little gaps like that authenticators are a wonderful addition. If they haven't, it's pretty useless.

I've personally never been account hacked over 5 years on accounts I made (Yeah...One acc that me and this girl who definitely quit but kept in contact with me got hacked, but I didn't make the account so I can't vouch for security) so I can't say it's "necessary."
Although, that Khaini guy that Takebacker (I think DustBunny) is apparently friend's with got hacked twice and he looks pro enough to have secure info sooo. Yeah this would be a nice implement.

MSEA has it since around Q2 last year (if i'm not mistaken). Its called @key. Its not foolproof as there were some forum threads complaining about their accounts being hacked even though they had bought it.

I've never had ANY account get hacked in all my years of playing online games, but I'd still take the extra security to make sure I have an extra layer of protection. Never been hacked in WoW, yet I still got an Authenticator for that extra layer. I'd instantly do the same if NexonNA introduced the system to GMS.

Accounts can only have 1, but 1 can be used on multiple accounts, assuming the accounts are linked together somehow [All Blizzard games are linked to a Battle.net account].
Losing it will pose a major problem since in order to "remove" it from said account you need to log into your account by entering the 6-8+ digit code and then entering the serial number of the Auth. No Auth, no way to get the 6-8+ code to log in in the first place. You'd have to call customer support to get it manually removed from your account and knowing Nexon, that'd be a major headache.
The authentication servers are controlled by Blizzard themselves, so I'd have to believe it'd be the same way for NexonJP.

I would get it too just for safety, but it feels like in GMS it's completely necessary as opposed to an extra layer or else your account is wide open. Which is sad.

While that may have been how it was implemented elsewhere that's not an actual requirement. You can have multiple fobs that are cloned from the same seed. I had a "master" copy of certain clients' in case they had emergencies and we even had an internal website that could generate the appropriate key if we entered all the master info for a fob and serve as a surrogate.

It's February year 2010. My guildmate was one of the testers.
