PECompact - Friend or a foe?
#1
My anti-virus has been detecting a virus on my computer ever since I downloaded update for shockwave player. It's called PECompact and when I googled it, it says that sometimes it's completely harmless "executable compression" used by softwares (in this case: shockwave player?).

My anti-virus is quite old, so according to wikipedia it would be normal for old versions to categorize every PECompact file as a virus...

So what do you think? Is it part of Shockwave player or actually virus?

In this case - Friend
In other cases - Foe

Sometimes programs like PECompact are used to hide digital traces of a virus within a program since the exe is compressed and therefore the program assembly is hidden. Hiding assembly code is indicative of a virus in some cases. In others, such as this one and Themida in Maplestory, it's fine.
