What are we smoking?

Recent events all shows people dissatisfactions with the game "Maplestory". If someone who read the things I have, then I have no idea why people are still playing this game.

The game itself: the classes are imbalanced. Archmages everywhere are unhappy about the favorable life of the bishop. This isn't something that's just said. It's proven over and over: how genesis is stronger, how genesis is faster, how genesis is better. Even some people who play their own job, are not even satisfied with themselves as a character/job, let alone others.

The game play itself: do people even ‘play’ this game anymore? Are people so obsessed with level ups that they’re only looking for ‘legitimate’ ways to cheat? Exposing ways to bot this game and publically asking for abuses of its glitches for benefits.

Maplestory might be entiltled as a “MMOPRG” but there it lacks the quality of what an RPG is.
 Spoiler

Customer service… or lack of. Exposing a reality of the Nexon Corporation is a bannable offense apparently as ComputerProf’s famous incident has shown us.
 Spoiler

Their negligence of standards for paying customers, their disregards of their game’s glitches, their greed for limiting the best of the game’s quality to paying customers only. The gashapon and it's nightmare with dark scrolls, elemental weapons, facial accessory, etc. all of which are extremely nice to have for your character but is limited to cash paying customers--making the gap between the paying and nonpaying extremely wide. Ironically, the paying customers are treated with no more “attention” then non paying customers or even the attention you would give to any random person on the street.

This was shown by a more recent event of a paying customer’s issue where he lost access to his PAYING account. Not only neglect of a customer, but banished from their forums as well as their service.

I recently talked to a friend of mine about this whole “modern Maplestory” businesses. I used to play this game for fun, but not anymore. We came upon a few agreements that we all have our own reasons to play Maplestory. One of the bigger reasons was friends—on other words, interactions with other players. Friends that can be “pulled” out of the game into reality (obtaining their AIM, MSN, etc). Or even in some instances, love. I’ve seen a few relationships become real from this game where the two live happily ever after.

That said when we open up Maplestory.exe and KNOWING that the game, the gameplay, the glitches, the abuses, the inequality, the lack of quality, the company, the service, all suck, then what are we really doing?

I'm agreeing with this post more and more as I spend time off MS. I haven't really played in about 2 months, and I've been exploring other games out there. Still, MapleStory is one of the better asian MMOs out there, but that doesn't say much.

I personally have never paid a single cent to Nexon. I don't care for the advantages of NX because I play for fun. Who needs a stupid hat that doesn't change gameplay at all? Who needs to megaphone spam to annoy people? It's stupid. Who even needs a 2x card (because let's be honest, you're buying levels and not freeing up your time since you purposely play to fully utilize the card). Leveling up faster would only serve to make the game less fun due to the ridiculous exp curve...

I've never had any issues with the service because, luckily, I've never needed it. If I did, I probably would have gotten screwed over and would have subsequently moved on. That would mean nothing really lost and I was entertained for a long time, which is all I can really ask for from a game...

Then again, my views on the game differ from the vast majority of the people that play it. I've been playing since beta and I'm not even 4th job yet so that should tell you how seriously I take this game Tongue The ratio of entertainment to disposable income the game offers is extremely good for me because that's dividing by 0 Eek As such, MS is my "fall-back" game when there's no other games on the market that I think warrant a purchase. I used to do the same thing with MUDs.

Anyway, nice post.

It's too bad that trying to "enjoy" the game consists of buying nexon cash in the process. Hurt

It's true that you CAN play the game without ever buying NX. For some people it works too as the poster above stated , but it takes a bit of dedication to do so. This is supposed to be a game but it almost feels more like a job or chore. Really, what the pineapple am I doing still playing? Rolleyes

It's a fun game. Sure, Nexon sucks. The community sucks. The customer service sucks. The fact you need to pay money to fully enjoy the game sucks. But it's still a fun game, which is why it's quickly becoming one of the most popular MMORPGs. I'm not saying you're wrong, that post was awesome and completely right, but there is a reason why people play.

IDK. I have fun with the game. I've put maybe around a hundred bucks into it, but that's about it. Half of it was from gifts and whatnot so yea...:X

I just have fun with it. Besides, if I made an islander...yea. Tongue

Sadly, this is all true, and quite pathetic in the sense. People still choose to play this MMO (even I still do, even when I bash it half of the time). I still have fun if I take a casual break here and there, that and the fact that my friends are on there.. well... keeps me on there. I usually only go on to APQ and chat these days now though, since I'm too busy with college.

NX is no longer a want, it's considered as a need now because of the advantages of an NX-user over a non-NX user. Whether you choose to accept that or not, is up to you @ whoever reads my post.

Most people find some little reason to play maple. Think of it this way, if you even have to ask yourself "why do I play?" then should you keep playing? It is a game, plain and simple. We tend to take maple so seriously because there is major person to person contact. Play it cause you feel like it. Don't worry about why.
yes, we can come up with so many reasons why Nexon sucks (and we all know they do) but its all we got (excluding private servers, and the few that can manage to hide their IPs). So play it or don't.
And if that didn't help maybe this will:
Just like psychopat I've been playing since beta and my highest level character is 95! I know people that are almost 4th job and have been playing for a year. It sucks, but I still log on and I still grind and I still spend money on it. And I really don't care, its fun.

old news dude ._.

maplestory is still a thriving game- though 2x coupons shouldn't been relsed, its not like nexon america has that much controll on job classes and stuff.

Korea controlls that. If the game sucks, stop ruining our time. we know this. is that why worldwide maplestory has 83million people playing? its a good game. youre not giving it as much credit as it deserves.

people like you who flame nexon, and give them no credit, is why this game rots. if you give them a second to breath, MAYBE they can show more potential.

Nexon has improved- there not as good as wizet, but their ok. Look, there are alot of other versions who have been whacked in other ways.

if you hate the game quit. its not that hard.

take this to heart-

people who complain and flame nexon, you are just making it WORSE

this is neccisarily why I wanted to quit. nexon cant improve if you are breathing down their necks-

major-stream content like that is how korea invisioned that: we cant change that.

Maybe this is just the way I see it, but I think this is the easiest MMO to walk into and be able to understand rather efficiently. I never had too much of a problem with it. I look at other games occasionally and try reading some of the posts, even some basic guides, and it just is way too confusing for me. >_<

Besides, MapleStory is the only game I know of that has the possibilities of "Islanders". Big Grin

What I find amusing is the people who peach the most about nexon are the ones that spend the money on the game. To each their own I guess....

This thread got a tad derailed. This isn't about Nexon and their old-news crappy service. It's about the players.

I admit, this is the first long post (and only one so far) that i've read every word...in sp.net or sw.net.

If only i'd known how things would play out for me in the future when i finally decided to download this game back in beta after some friends kept insistently telling me to play it...

I don't regret spending so much time in the game, i don't regret what i missed out on in "life" because of time spent in the game, but the quality of the game right now, in the present tense, still leaves a lot to be desired. What keeps me logging in are the people i met and know in game, it's not the game itself. Maybe i should get aim/msn as an alternative.

Same here, and I'm sure it is what keeps a lot of people going. I have to be doing something though; I can't just sit there and discuss stuff on AIM/MSN without doing SOMETHING. At least with MS you can do w/e you feel like and yea. Redface

IDK...there's just something about it that appeals to me. I don't look at it as a generic game that you always see in banner ads and stuff. :X

if its about rthe players...just IGNORE them.

and no, the way YOU put it, it IS about the game itself. bad customer service isnt about there crappy service? lol

and its realy a way for a archmage to be talking about how bishops are stronger. lol

you said THIS:

That said when we open up Maplestory.exe and KNOWING that the game, the gameplay, the glitches, the abuses, the inequality, the lack of quality, the company, the service, all suck, then what are we really doing?

thats big. we cant do anytrhing about those. nexon cant change the gameplay, only maintain the game and make non-mainstream comnent.

if you hate the game, *wow, am I realy saying this?*
QUIT NOW. I HATE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THESE THREADS. I QUIT SP AND BASIL BECAUSE OF THIS.

Well I play because this is a nice simple game that is relaxing and I can use it to relax after a stressful day at work. I don't want to try to figure out some complicated mumo-jumbo. I want something easy and cute where I can do what I want without any pvp. MS is perfect in that respect.

I don't see the classes as all that imbalanced. I made some of each of the ones I like (I have 12 chars that I consider "mains") and I play them when I'm in the mood to play that char. Naturally different chars have different plusses and minuses, if they were all the same having different jobs would be pointless.

NX is definatly not a necessity. When I was poor (husband in school and room & board cost $200 more a month than I made) I didn't buy any nx and the game was still fun. Now that we are both working I can afford to spend money on entertainment and I do (though definatly not those $1000+ a year people o.o more like $10 a month or so.) Anyway, if anyone feels NX is a necissity just market in MTS because NX is free, all you have to contribute is your time at marketing. I easily make $50 a month in MTS just merchanting.

So personally I play because I like the game and I don't understand why other's feel they way they do (that you have to spend $$$, that you have to lvl, that you can only play one char and it's not fair that xxx char is better, etc). And it's obvious they don't understand me (I get 90% of my nx from merchanting in mts, I do not play to lvl, and if I like another char beter I play it instead).
