*This coming from a non-technical person*
Gameguard is technically some kind of trojan/rootkit/whatever, so they classify it as a virus.
Well, that's what I said to Basilers.
I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about.

I thought I WAS the only person having that problem.. phew....Can't get on Maple though -_-.. it's telling me i don't have access to it lol since Avast put it in the Chest. I even re-downloaded maple.. SAME thing! So my guess is to disable avast for the time being while you're on MS. Before that I EVEN went on my back up MS like you xBish.. SAME thing. So I'm disabling Avast..
Edit: I just put the entire Nexon folder in the 'Exclusions' path section...STILL same result. I think once Avast updated it's virus database it found that MS is a potential Malware virus :F6:.. but then again.. once I uninstalled maple.. it found malware virus in the C:\system volume control\A0006095 path..so yea I'm not good at the viruses/bugs/trojans area.

so its avast, it updated this morning, i guess it sees maple as a virus now... i dont want to disable my antivirus.... i am paranoid now.. does avast has some kind of pm box where one can report this kind of issue?
ok found something

LoLLoLL made this all credit to him in basil
For Avast! users:
When you open up Maple, a window from Avast will pop up warning you that MapleStory has been detected as a rootkit virus. What you DO NOT want to do is click on "Move to Chest", "Rename/Delete", "Take No Action" (or something along those lines), or any other button. What you DO want to do is click the "x" at the top right corner of the box, signifying "close".
1. Next, go to your taskbar, and right click the Avast! icon and go to On Access Protection Control...
2. After you are in the On-Access Protection Control, go to Standard Shield.
3. Go to Customize... and click the Advanced tab.
4. -skip this step if you know the target of Maplestory . exe; default is C:NexonMapleStoryMapleStory . exe-
Now leave that window open, and go to your Maple Story folder/directory. Go to the link bar at the top and copy the link there (default: C:NexonMapleStory)
5. Go back to the On Access Protection Control window, and click Add.
6. Paste the link you just copied, and then add "Maplestory . exe". Click OK, and then OK again.
EDIT: You can also just skip all those steps and stop your On-Access Protection by right clicking on the Avast! icon and clicking "Stop On-Access Protection", but I do not recommend this because you could forget to turn it on again and you could leave your computer at risk.

mmhmm yup updated this morning for me as well. Yeah i know everybody is paranoid about disabling their protection software. Yeah it does have a report feature, in the avast setting, go down to "report file" and just type in the path of maple.
Edit: I did what the guy said, for including the nexon folder in the exceptions path, and it doesn't work. Same error occurs saying that you can't use the path/file.
Edit 2: It works now..the guy had to edit his solution for avast users a bit. I was flipping out for a bit lmao XD. I thought the site got hacked.. again..

I'm glad I'm not the only one who freaked out. I uninstalled it just to make sure. Thanks for the help on letting us know how to fix this.

I hate Avast ;_;
I always says 'Virus database has been updated' in a pedovoice.
Bleh.
What I do is right click the icon on the task bar, click the top option, the 'Pause' it.
This stops it stopping Maple from opening.
Also, if you think you may forget to reactivate it, leave the window open so you know the turn it back on.

:O -switches to AVG?- I didn't know people were having this problem. I've been a bad girl and I haven't updated Avast in ages.

Wow this is turning pretty common. It's a virus called EmpowerMS.exe. Where we got it, we don't know. I found it real funny for some reason, but ehh... yeah. I'm reformatting a computer as we speak due to that virus. :3 Well, it had a few more on there, but it was real buggy, so chea.
I'm not sure if it's possible, but look for the file (EmpowerMS.exe) and try manually deleting it and whatever else looks like it. Maybe that will help? >.<

Just switch to another antivirus program. It's not technically a virus. I've had that problem before. I use AVG and I was fine while I played, but if you have problems, just disable your anti-virus while you play maple and don't open any browers or anything.

Make sure you have the directory correct for the exceptions.
Alternatively, you can have it as a directory by using a wildcard.
For example, mine is E:\Program Files\Wizet\MapleStory\*
I know GameGuard (in addition to MapleStory.exe) has set it off before, so that covers that and allows you to be lazy.

Well I'm pretty sure that somebody probably got that virus & reported it to Avast & now avast updated its system & deemed the non-virus MS a actual threat. So yea.. everything is gravy now though for avast users. Hope you get your comp situation cleared away. You have a external HD to put your stuff on?

Avast was finding this on my system as well. However, I just disabled the Standard Shield before starting Maple if it reported a problem. After a couple of days, the definitions updated and removed the false positive.
It has happened before, and it's annoying, but Avast always gets their stuff sorted out in a day or two.
I certainly didn't have any "empower" thing; it said mine was a rootkit-gen, which made me laugh because (as someone else stated) GameGuard basically is a rootkit. It does everything except allow a GM to remotely control your system.
